Chapter 8 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

Daniel looked at Elena.
She was already reaching for her phone to contact Bell.
“What video?” he asked.
“Wade installed a small camera above the kitchen door.”
“Our security cameras don’t cover that hallway.”
“I know.”
The answer landed hard.
“Why was there another camera in my house?”
“Ruth wanted to know when you were home.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Where does it record?”
“To a box in the utility closet.”
“Why are you telling me now?”
Vivian’s breathing changed.
“Because she’s saying I put him down there.”
“Did you?”
“I didn’t close it.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
She hung up.
Bell’s team found the recorder behind an electrical access panel.
Its clock was nine minutes slow.
The footage was intact.
Daniel and Elena watched it at the station with Bell beside them.
At 10:42 that morning, Noah entered the kitchen carrying a strip of paper and the brass key.
Vivian reached for them.
Noah stepped back.
His mouth moved.
There was no audio.
Vivian grabbed his wrist.
Elena’s fingers dug into Daniel’s arm.
Ruth entered from the hallway.
The three moved out of view.
Seven minutes later, Ruth returned alone.
She carried a screwdriver.
Vivian followed.
She was crying.
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
His sister picked up her phone.
Ruth took it from her hand.
Then Ruth pointed toward the living room.
Vivian shook her head.
Ruth slapped the paper against her chest.
Neither parent spoke.
The footage continued.
At 11:18, Vivian carried the rolled Persian rug across the hallway.
Wade appeared behind her.
Together, they dragged it toward the living room.
Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
Bell paused the video.
“Do you need a minute?”
“No.”
His voice sounded unfamiliar.
“Keep going.”
At 11:31, Vivian returned to the kitchen.
She poured water.
Drank it.
Checked her makeup in the dark window of the microwave.
Then she made the call reporting Noah missing.
Elena started crying without making a sound.
Vivian had stood above their trapped son, fixed her face, and called his mother.
Bell turned off the screen.
“That gives us a very different account from the one they gave.”
Daniel stared at the frozen image.
“Play the part with the rug again.”
Bell did.
Wade crossed the hallway behind Vivian.
Something was tucked under his arm.
Noah’s blue dinosaur hoodie.
The one Lily had been holding.
Daniel turned to Elena.
“Lily said she found it.”
Elena shook her head slowly.
“No.”
May you like
Her face drained.
“She said someone gave it to her.”
