Chapter 1 - THE RUG

“Daddy, Noah’s under the floor.”

Daniel Carter stopped breathing.

His five-year-old daughter stood barefoot in the living room, holding her missing brother’s blue dinosaur hoodie.

“He says he’s cold,” Lily whispered. “And the bad lady’s coming back.”

Across the room, Daniel’s older sister stopped smiling.

For six hours, they had searched for Noah.

Six hours of police questions, unanswered calls, and Daniel shouting his son’s name into streets that gave him nothing back.

Now Lily was pointing at the Persian rug beneath his feet.

“Sweetheart, what did you hear?”

“Three knocks. Then scratching.”

Vivian rose from the couch.

“She’s confused, Daniel. Let me take her upstairs.”

Lily stepped behind her father.

It was a small movement.

Daniel noticed anyway.

His wife, Elena, crossed the room.

“She stays with us.”

“Oh, for God’s sake.” Vivian folded her arms. “Somebody needs to stay calm.”

Daniel looked down at the red-and-gold rug.

Vivian had brought it three days earlier.

She had insisted on placing it in this exact spot.

He bent and grabbed a corner.

“DON’T TOUCH THAT!”

The scream ripped through the room.

Elena stared at her.

“Why?”

Vivian’s mouth opened, then closed.

“The floors,” she said. “They were just refinished.”

Daniel pulled.

The rug rolled back, exposing a rectangle of noticeably lighter wood.

A narrow seam ran around three sides.

Something small and pale was caught between two boards.

A broken fingernail.

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel took out his phone and started recording.

“That doesn’t prove anything,” Vivian said.

“Then be quiet.”

He pressed his hand against the floor.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lily began crying.

“That’s him.”

Daniel dropped flat against the boards.

“Noah?”

Scratching answered.

Then a voice, thin and trembling.

“Daddy?”

Daniel’s face crumpled.

“I’m here, buddy.”

“Please don’t leave me.”

“Never. I’m getting you out.”

He hooked his fingers into the seam and pulled until pain shot through his hands.

The panel didn’t move.

Elena was already calling 911.

Vivian stepped backward.

“Daniel, you need to listen—”

“No.”

“Noah wasn’t supposed—”

She stopped.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What did you say?”

Below him, his son started crying harder.

“Daddy. She’s coming back.”

Vivian was still standing beside the couch.

Daniel looked toward the front door.

A key slid into the lock.

May you like

The handle turned.

And the woman who had spent the afternoon helping police search for Noah stepped inside.
