Chapter 3 - THE STORY THEY TOLD

At the hospital, Daniel sat beside Noah while a nurse warmed his hands.
The doctor said he was dehydrated and dangerously chilled, but responding well.
His damaged fingernail needed cleaning and a dressing.
Daniel stared at the little bandage until Elena touched his shoulder.
“He’s here.”
Daniel nodded.
He couldn’t speak yet.
Detective Mara Bell arrived after midnight.
She pulled up a chair but left her notebook closed.
“Noah doesn’t need to tell everything tonight,” she said. “We can start with you.”
Daniel explained the attorney appointment.
His father, Thomas Carter, had died eleven months earlier.
Ruth had been managing the estate’s paperwork.
Recently, she had urged Daniel to sign a final settlement acknowledging that he had received his full inheritance.
Something about the figures bothered Elena.
They had arranged a meeting with an independent attorney, Martin Shaw.
Vivian had volunteered to watch the children.
“She pushed us to go,” Elena said. “Told us to take our time.”
Bell’s expression sharpened.
“What happened at the meeting?”
“Ruth never delivered the bank statements Martin requested,” Daniel said. “We were waiting when Vivian called about Noah.”
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vivian.
YOU KNOW I WOULD NEVER HURT HIM.
Another followed.
RUTH SAID HE WOULD ONLY BE DOWN THERE A FEW MINUTES.
Daniel handed the phone to Bell.
She read both messages without changing expression.
“Don’t respond.”
“Why isn’t she in jail?”
“She and Ruth are being interviewed separately. I need facts that will hold when their lawyers arrive.”
“She admitted it.”
“She admitted something. We’ll establish exactly what.”
Elena stepped into the hallway with Bell.
Daniel remained beside the bed.
Noah opened his eyes.
“Did I get Lily in trouble?”
Daniel leaned forward.
“No. Why would you think that?”
“Aunt Vivian said if I kept yelling, Lily would have to come down, too.”
Daniel looked away.
He needed one second to make his face safe for his son.
When he turned back, he took Noah’s uninjured hand.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I took the key.”
“Where did you find it?”
“In Grandpa’s picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one Aunt Vivian brought. The back fell off.”
Noah swallowed.
“There was paper, too. I thought it was a treasure map.”
Daniel remembered the framed photograph Vivian had left in the upstairs study.
His father holding Noah on his shoulders.
“What happened to the paper?”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“She made me give it back.”
“Who did?”
“Aunt Vivian.”
In the doorway, Elena went pale.
Her phone was in her hand.
Daniel stood.
“What?”
She turned the screen toward him.

Their home security app showed the upstairs study.
Someone was inside their house.
