Chapter 12 - THE ACCOUNT THAT COULDN’T WAIT

Martin went straight from the meeting to his office.

Bell contacted the financial investigators.

Daniel spent the afternoon answering questions he wished he had asked months earlier.

Who had recommended their lender?

Vivian.

Who had arranged the seller’s closing agent?

Ruth.

Who had discouraged a separate property inspection?

Wade.

Each answer made the same shape.

Elena arrived carrying the folder from their home purchase.

“I kept the original closing packet.”

Martin looked up.

“Good.”

She laid it on his desk.

Daniel recognized the small yellow tabs.

He had teased her about them.

Called her suspicious.

She had asked why the seller’s company had been formed only weeks before the sale.

Vivian had laughed.

“That’s how investors work.”

Daniel had believed his sister.

Now Elena pointed to a wiring instruction attached near the back.

“The account changed the morning we closed.”

Martin examined it.

“Who sent this?”

“Ruth. She said the title office had updated its instructions.”

A financial investigator joined by phone.

The account number matched one already associated with Harbor Ridge.

From there, money had moved through two other entities.

Vivian’s information supplied the last link.

A pending transfer would send most of the remaining proceeds overseas.

The investigators moved quickly, but nobody promised Daniel an outcome.

By late afternoon, the bank had placed a hold while emergency court papers were reviewed.

Martin called just before seven.

“The transfer won’t go through tomorrow.”

Daniel sat down on the hotel bed.

For the first time in days, something had stopped moving away from them.

“How much?”

“Enough to matter. We still have work to do on ownership and restitution.”

Elena closed her eyes when he told her.

Then Noah appeared in the bathroom doorway.

“Can we order pizza?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Yes, buddy.”

“With the little pepperonis?”

“All the little pepperonis.”

They ate from paper plates.

Lily put olives on every fingertip.

Noah smiled.

A real one.

Daniel nearly missed Bell’s call because he was watching it.

He stepped into the hallway.

“We recovered Ruth’s briefcase,” she said.

“The paper?”

“Yes. It’s your father’s original note listing the storage unit and Evelyn’s contact information.”

“What else?”

“Drafts of documents. Some carrying your signature.”

“Forged signatures.”

“Yes.”

Bell paused.

“There’s also an email from Ruth to Vivian, sent the night before Noah disappeared.”

Daniel waited.

Bell read it carefully.

“If Daniel leaves Shaw’s office without signing, we lose control of the entire estate.”

He looked through the open hotel door at his children.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying they knew your appointment could expose them before you ever left your kids there.”
