Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WITH THE KEY

Ruth Sloane stood in the doorway carrying a leather briefcase.
She had handled Daniel’s father’s estate for almost a year.
That morning, she had hugged Elena and promised they would find Noah.
Now her eyes went straight to the exposed floor.
Not Daniel.
Not Elena.
The floor.
“What happened here?”
“My son is underneath it,” Daniel said. “Tell me how it opens.”
Ruth looked at Vivian.
That glance was enough.
Daniel moved toward them.
Elena caught his arm.
“Stay with Noah.”
Her voice cut through the rage.
Daniel turned back and dropped to his knees.
“Buddy, move away from my voice. Can you do that?”
A faint shuffle came from below.
Ruth set down her briefcase.
“There’s an old service space. The renovation crew should have sealed—”
“How does it open?”
“I don’t know.”
Outside, a siren rose.
Vivian rushed toward the hallway.
Elena stepped into her path.
“Where are you going?”
“To get something that might help.”
“Then tell us where it is.”
Vivian stared at her.
Ruth reached into her purse.
Daniel stood.
“Hands where I can see them.”
“It’s my phone.”
“Put it down.”
Two officers entered through the open door.
Officer Alvarez took in the overturned rug, Elena’s phone, Lily crying beside the couch.
Then Noah knocked again.
Alvarez immediately called for fire rescue.
Her partner moved Ruth and Vivian into the dining room.
Daniel grabbed the fireplace poker.
“Sir,” Alvarez said, “help is thirty seconds away.”
“My kid has been down there six hours.”
She knelt beside him.
“Then let’s make sure we don’t hurt him getting him out.”
Firefighters arrived with pry bars.
One found two recessed screws hidden beneath wood-colored plugs.
The panel lifted.
Cold air breathed out of the opening.
Noah lay curled beside a heating duct in a cramped concrete service space.
His socks were wet.
One hand was tucked beneath his chest.
Daniel climbed down before anyone could stop him.
“Daddy?”
“I’ve got you.”
Noah wrapped both arms around his neck.
Daniel felt how badly he was shaking.
A firefighter guided them upward.
Elena took her son’s face between her hands.
“Oh, baby. Oh, my sweet boy.”
A paramedic wrapped him in blankets.
Noah flinched when Ruth spoke from the dining room.
“I’m so relieved.”
He gripped Daniel’s shirt.
“That’s her.”
The room went still.
Noah pointed with his injured hand.
“She closed it.”
Ruth’s expression barely changed.

Then Noah reached into his pocket and pulled out a small brass key.
“And she said Grandpa’s box was hers.”
