Chapter 5 - THE LIE THAT BROKE MY MARRIAGE

My father sat down slowly.
For the first time in my lifeâŠ
He looked old.
Not tired.
Broken.
âYour wife loved you.â
I stared at him.
âThen why did you let me believe she betrayed me?â
He closed his eyes.
âBecause I was afraid.â
âAfraid of what?â
He looked at Juniper.
âLosing you.â
I shook my head.
âYou lost me anyway.â
The words hurt.
But they were true.
My father had spent four years protecting a lie.
And that lie had allowed my sister to hurt my daughter.
âTell me everything.â
He took a deep breath.
âBefore Emily died, she found out something.â
âWhat?â
âYour sister and your mother-in-law were involved in financial fraud.â
I frowned.
âWhat does that have to do with Juniper?â
âEmily threatened to expose them.â
My hands went cold.
âShe knew?â
âYes.â
My father looked away.
âShe told me she had evidence.â
âAnd?â
âAnd two weeks later, she died.â
The room became silent.
My heart pounded.
âAre you saying my wifeâs death wasnât an accident?â
My father didnât answer.
That was enough.
I stood up.
âWhat evidence?â
âI donât know.â
âDad.â
His eyes filled with regret.
âEmily hid it.â
âWhere?â
âI donât know.â
I walked away.
My entire life had just been rewritten.
The woman I thought betrayed me had actually been protecting me.
The family I trusted had been lying.
And my daughterâŠ
My daughter had been the target of something I couldnât understand.
That night, I sat beside Juniperâs bed.
I watched her sleep.
Her tiny hand held onto her stuffed rabbit.
She looked peaceful.
Innocent.
She had no idea the adults around her had failed her.
I whispered:
âI donât care what any test says.â
A tear rolled down my face.
âYouâre my daughter.â
The next morning, I got a call from an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
A womanâs voice spoke.
âAre you Juniperâs father?â
âYes.â
There was hesitation.
Then:
âMy name is Clara Bennett.â
I froze.
That name sounded familiar.
âWhy are you calling?â
Her voice became softer.
âBecause Emily asked me to contact you if anything happened to her.â
My heart stopped.
âWhat?â
âShe left something behind.â
I stood up.
âWhat did she leave?â
A long pause.
Then Clara whispered:
âProof that your sister tried to destroy your family.â
I looked toward the hallway.
Juniper was standing there holding her inhaler.
And behind herâŠ
Someone was watching through the window.
I moved instantly.
âJuniper, get behind me!â
The figure disappeared.
But not before I saw one thing.
May you like
A familiar jacket.
My fatherâs jacket.
