Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH BEHIND EMILY’S LAST DAYS

For five seconds

Nobody moved.

The warehouse was silent.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind refused to accept what I had just heard.

“Emily?”

I looked at my father.

“You’re saying my wife was behind this?”

My father couldn’t look me in the eyes.

Tabitha smiled.

“She was smarter than you thought.”

I felt anger rising.

“Don’t say her name.”

She tilted her head.

“Why? Because you still love her?”

I stepped forward.

“Because she’s dead.”

“And dead people can still hide secrets.”

Detective Harris moved closer.

“Enough.”

He looked at Tabitha.

“You’re going to explain everything.”

But she only smiled.

“You still think I’m the villain.”

She looked at me.

“That’s because nobody ever told you the full story.”

I held Juniper tighter.

“Then tell me.”

Tabitha looked at my father.

“Tell him.”

My father closed his eyes.

And finally

After four years of lies

He told the truth.

“Emily discovered the truth about Juniper’s birth.”

I shook my head.

“We already know she was my daughter.”

“No.”

My father looked at me.

“She discovered someone changed the records before Juniper was born.”

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

He continued.

“Emily was told there was a problem with the pregnancy records. Someone had manipulated information before the birth.”

My heart raced.

“Who?”

My father looked toward Tabitha.

“Your sister knew.”

I turned.

“Tabitha?”

She didn’t deny it.

Instead, she laughed quietly.

“I was young.”

“You were an adult.”

“I made mistakes.”

I looked at her.

“You stole medicine from a child.”

Her face hardened.

“I was trying to fix everything.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were trying to save yourself.”

The truth slowly came together.

Emily had discovered the fraud.

She had gathered evidence.

She had planned to expose everyone involved.

But someone got there first.

Someone tried to make her look guilty.

Someone made me believe my wife betrayed me.

“Then why did you tell me she was hiding something?”

Tabitha looked away.

“Because I wanted you to hate her.”

The words hit harder than anything.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Because everyone loved Emily.”

Silence.

“She was perfect.”

“She had the perfect marriage.”

“The perfect child.”

“And I was always the failure.”

I stared at her.

“So you destroyed my family because you were jealous?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Then Juniper whispered:

“Daddy
”

I looked down.

She was staring at my father.

“Grandpa was scared.”

Everyone froze.

My father’s face changed.

“Juniper
”

She hugged my arm.

“Mommy told Grandpa to be brave.”

My eyes widened.

“What?”

Juniper looked confused.

“Before Mommy went away.”

My heart stopped.

“Sweetheart
”

“What else did Mommy say?”

She thought carefully.

Then whispered:

“She said Grandpa knew who hurt her.”

My father closed his eyes.

Because my daughter had just revealed the one secret he had spent four years hiding.

Detective Harris immediately turned toward him.

“Orson.”

May you like

My father said nothing.

And that silence was his confession.
