Chapter 11 - THE BETRAYAL I NEVER SAW COMING

I went to see my father the next morning.

No anger.

No shouting.

Just questions.

Because anger could wait.

The truth couldn’t.

He opened the door.

And when he saw my face

He knew.

“You found out.”

I walked inside.

“You paid him.”

My father looked away.

“I can explain.”

“That’s what everyone says before they lie.”

His shoulders dropped.

“I didn’t kill Emily.”

“I didn’t ask that.”

I stepped closer.

“I asked why you paid the man who destroyed her life.”

My father sat down.

For the first time, he didn’t look like the powerful man I grew up fearing.

He looked broken.

“I was trying to save you.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

I placed the bank record on the table.

“Save me from what?”

He stared at the paper.

Then he whispered:

“Your wife found out the truth about Juniper.”

My jaw tightened.

“She found out she was my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Then why the fake DNA test?”

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because Emily’s father threatened her.”

“With what?”

“He said if she exposed him, he would destroy everyone she loved.”

I looked at him.

“And you believed him?”

“I was afraid.”

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that had allowed everyone to fail my daughter.

“You watched my sister take Juniper’s inhaler because you were afraid.”

My father looked down.

“I thought Tabitha would stop.”

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“She became worse.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because she believed she deserved everything Emily had.”

My stomach turned.

My sister.

My own sister.

Jealous of a dead woman.

Jealous of a child.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Detective Harris.

A photo.

Attached was a security image.

I opened it.

And my blood froze.

It showed Tabitha entering the hospital the night Emily died.

I looked at my father.

“Why was she there?”

His face went pale.

“I don’t know.”

But I knew.

He did.

“You’re still protecting her.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“You’re always protecting someone.”

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, my father said:

“Your sister didn’t act alone.”

I stopped.

Slowly turned.

“What?”

His voice shook.

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

My father looked terrified.

“Someone who has been watching Juniper since the day she was born.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

He whispered a name.

A name I never expected.

“Your wife’s doctor.”

I froze.

Emily’s doctor.

The person who helped bring my daughter into the world.

The person who had been trusted with everything.

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

His voice was urgent.

“You need to get to the hospital.”

“Why?”

“Because Dr. Miller just disappeared.”

My heart dropped.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“He left behind a message.”

“What message?”

Detective Harris lowered his voice.

May you like

“He wrote
”

“Your daughter was never supposed to survive.”
