Chapter 3 - THE SECRET MY FATHER HID

I spent the entire night staring at old family photos.

Looking for answers.

Looking for the moment my family changed.

Because my father had always been distant with Juniper.

I noticed it before.

I just ignored it.

He rarely hugged her.

Rarely played with her.

Never called her his little princess like he did with my older brother’s children.

I always told myself he was just getting older.

I was wrong.

The next morning, I went to his house.

He opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.

“You came because of Tabitha.”

“No.”

I stepped inside.

“I came because of Juniper.”

His face tightened.

“What about her?”

“Why don’t you love her?”

The question hit harder than I expected.

My father looked away.

“That’s not fair.”

“No?”

I placed the medical report on the table.

“You watched your daughter take medicine away from a sick child.”

“I made a mistake.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You made a choice.”

Silence.

Then my father said something I never expected.

“Juniper reminds me of someone.”

My eyebrows narrowed.

“Who?”

He looked at the floor.

“Your mother.”

My heart stopped.

My mother had died when I was young.

“What does Mom have to do with my daughter?”

My father’s face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

“There are things you don’t know about that night.”

“What things?”

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.”

His voice dropped.

“Juniper shouldn’t exist.”

The words hit me like a punch.

I stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Before he could answer

My phone rang.

It was Willa.

Her voice was shaking.

“Come home.”

“Why?”

“I found something else on the recording.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Your sister wasn’t just taking the inhaler.”

“She was looking for something inside Juniper’s medical bag.”

I felt a chill run through me.

“What was she looking for?”

Willa hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Proof that Juniper is not your daughter.”

I froze.

Because suddenly this wasn’t about an inhaler anymore.

May you like

It was about a secret my family had buried for four years.

And someone was willing to hurt my child to keep it hidden.
