Chapter 12 - THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED HER GONE

I arrived at the hospital within minutes.
The same hospital where Juniper was born.
The same place where Emily held our daughter for the first time.
The same place where someone had started this nightmare.
Detective Harris met me outside.
His expression was serious.
âYou need to see this.â
He handed me a file.
Inside were medical records.
Old ones.
Emilyâs pregnancy records.
Juniperâs birth documents.
And hidden between themâŠ
A report I had never seen.
âWhat is this?â
âDr. Millerâs private notes.â
I read the first line.
Patient under pressure.
Possible threat from family members.
My heart raced.
I kept reading.
Emily suspected someone was trying to manipulate the birth records.
She suspected someone was trying to erase Juniperâs identity.
Then I saw the date.
Three days before Emily died.
A note written by Dr. Miller.
âFather has been informed. He refuses to act.â
My hands shook.
âFather?â
Detective Harris nodded.
âYour father.â
I closed the file.
All roads led back to him.
My father.
My sister.
Emilyâs father.
The doctor.
Everyone had touched this secret.
Everyone had protected themselves.
And everyone had left my daughter to pay the price.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
âHello?â
Only silence.
Then a childâs voice.
Juniper.
âDaddy?â
My heart stopped.
I looked around.
She wasnât with me.
âJuniper?â
The voice came again.
But something was wrong.
It wasnât my daughter.
It was a recording.
A recording of Juniper.
Then another voice appeared.
Tabitha.
âIf you want your daughter backâŠâ
My blood turned cold.
I ran.
âWhere is she?â
No answer.
Only another message.
A location.
An abandoned warehouse outside town.
Detective Harris grabbed my arm.
âYouâre not going alone.â
I looked at him.
âThey have my daughter.â
âWe donât know that.â
âI do.â
Because a father knows.
The drive felt endless.
When we arrived, police surrounded the building.
I entered first.
Inside was dark.
Empty.
Then I heard it.
A small voice.
âDaddy?â
I ran toward it.
âJuniper!â
She was sitting in the corner.
Crying.
But alive.
I dropped beside her and pulled her into my arms.
âYouâre okay.â
She held me tightly.
âI knew you would come.â
Behind usâŠ
A slow clap echoed through the warehouse.
I turned.
Tabitha stepped out of the shadows.
But she wasnât alone.
Standing beside her was someone I thought I would never see again.
My father.
I stared at him.
âWhat are you doing?â
He looked away.
And Tabitha smiled.
âYou still donât understand.â
I held Juniper closer.
âUnderstand what?â
She stepped forward.
âThe inhaler was never the plan.â
My blood ran cold.
âWhat?â
Tabitha looked at Juniper.
âWe needed something bigger.â
I tightened my grip on my daughter.
âWhat did you do?â
She smiled.
âWe needed you angry.â
âWhy?â
âBecause angry people make mistakes.â
Detective Harris stepped forward.
âYouâre under arrest.â
Tabitha laughed.
âNo.â
She looked at my father.
âTell him.â
My father closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
âThe person behind everythingâŠâ
He looked at me.
âIs someone you never suspected.â
I stared.
âWho?â
My fatherâs voice broke.
âEmily.â
The world stopped.
âWhat?â
Tabitha smiled.
âYour wife wasnât protecting you.â
âShe was hiding from you.â
I looked at Juniper.
Then back at them.
And for the first timeâŠ
May you like
I wondered if the truth I fought so hard to findâŠ
Was the truth I was never ready to hear.
