CHAPTER 3 – THE SOCIAL WORKER'S QUESTION

CHAPTER 3 – THE SOCIAL WORKER'S QUESTION
Child Protective Services arrived before sunrise.
The investigator spoke gently.
"Has your daughter ever stayed alone with your parents?"
I nodded.
"Every Thursday while I worked."
The investigator slowly closed her notebook.
"We'll need those dates."

She stopped drawing pictures.
She stopped singing.
She stopped asking to visit Grandma.
I thought she was simply growing up.
I was terribly wrong.
The investigator whispered,

"I think tonight wasn't the beginning."
"It was the first time she survived long enough to tell someone."
