At the hospital another doctor requested a complete examination.
My daughter trembled the entire time.
The nurse gently lifted her sleeves higher.
Fresh bruises covered her shoulders.
Older bruises covered her back.
Different stages of healing.
Different days.
The room became completely silent.
The doctor looked directly at me.
"These injuries didn't happen tonight."
My entire body froze.
"What do you mean?"
He answered carefully.
"Someone has been hurting your daughter for weeks."
My daughter started crying.
"I didn't tell you."
"I thought Grandma would take me away."
