Chapter 8 - The Family Divides

Margaret underestimated one thing.

Evidence.

She had spent years winning arguments through intimidation.

Courtrooms were different.

Our attorney filed the video.

Hospital records.

Witness statements.

The hidden photographs.

Her guardianship inquiries.

Everything.

Then relatives began choosing sides.

Susan supported us.

Daniel supported us.

Eric refused to become involved.

My uncle accused me of destroying the family.

I finally asked him a simple question.

“Where was your concern for family when Elena was unconscious on the floor?”

He never answered.

Margaret started telling everyone I was abusive because I had struck her.

I didn't deny it.

I told our attorney exactly what happened.

I told the police exactly what happened.

I wasn't proud of losing control.

But I wasn't going to rewrite reality to make myself look better.

Margaret had blocked the exit while holding a carving knife.

I had moved my wife and child away from danger.

That was the complete story.

The hearing was scheduled.

Elena dreaded it.

The night before, I found her sitting in Leo's nursery.

“You okay?”

“No.”

I sat beside her.

“What are you afraid of?”

“That she'll convince them.”

“Of what?”

“That I'm a bad mother.”

I stared at her.

Leo was sleeping peacefully in her arms.

She looked exhausted.

Still recovering.

Still frightened.

But every movement she made around our son was gentle.

Careful.

Loving.

“Elena.”

She looked at me.

“Margaret made you doubt yourself because that was the only way she could control you.”

Her eyes filled.

“What if the judge sees me the way she does?”

“Then we'll show the judge the truth.”

The next morning, we walked into court together.

Margaret was already there.

Perfect hair.

Pearl earrings.

Cream suit.

The image of a loving grandmother.

She smiled at me.

Then her attorney placed a thick folder on the table.

My attorney leaned toward me.

“They have something new.”

I looked at Margaret.

May you like

She smiled wider.

Whatever was inside that folder, she thought it would destroy us.
