I Came Home to Find My Wife Unconscious Beside Our Screaming Newborn—While My Mother Calmly Carved Dinner

My newborn son was screaming beside his unconscious mother.

And my mom?

She was still sitting at the dinner table, calmly slicing roast chicken like nothing had happened.

I dropped my travel bag and ran across the room.

“Elena!”

My wife was crumpled beside the bassinet, her face pale and damp with sweat.

Leo’s tiny cries filled the house.

My mother, Margaret, barely looked up.

“Oh, please,” she said, dragging the carving knife through another piece of chicken.

“Drop the act.”

I froze.

Then I lifted Leo from the bassinet and held him tightly against my chest.

With my free hand, I touched Elena’s cheek.

It was cold.

Clammy.

“Elena.”

I dropped beside her.

“Look at me.”

Her eyelids fluttered.

Slowly, her fingers wrapped around my wrist.

“Elena, what happened?”

Her lips barely moved.

Then she whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“She worked me to death.”

I looked at my mother.

She didn't apologize.

She didn't even look ashamed.

She simply placed another slice of chicken onto her plate.

That was enough.

I slipped one arm beneath Elena and helped her to her feet while keeping Leo safely against my chest.

“We’re leaving.”

That finally got Margaret out of her chair.

She stepped directly in front of the door, still holding the carving knife in one hand and the fork in the other.

Her eyes went straight to Leo.

“You are not taking my grandson anywhere.”

The entire room went silent.

Every relative at that table stared at me, waiting to see what I would do.

I carefully shifted Leo higher against my shoulder.

Then I moved Elena behind me.

“Move.”

Margaret didn't.

Instead, she tightened her grip on the knife.

“This is my family.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

My voice came out colder than I expected.

“This is my wife.”

I glanced at Leo.

“And this is my son.”

Margaret stepped closer.

That was her mistake.

I struck her once across the face.

She stumbled backward and fell onto the rug.

The room exploded with screams.

Someone dropped a glass.

My aunt jumped out of her chair.

My brother shouted my name.

I didn't care.

For the first time since walking through that door, Margaret looked genuinely shocked.

I stood between her and my wife.

Between her and my child.

And I finally said the words I should have said a long time ago.

“Then it’s you who has to go.”

Margaret stared at me from the floor.

I pointed toward the door.

“Get out of my house.”

“Now.”

But what my mother had done to Elena while I was away was far worse than I realized.

And when I discovered what the relatives sitting around that table had helped her hide...
