Chapter 13 - Margaret Comes Back

Margaret appeared one final time.

Not at our house.

At Daniel's wedding rehearsal dinner six months later.

Daniel had not invited her.

She came anyway.

The restaurant became silent when she walked inside.

She looked older.

Smaller somehow.

But still Margaret.

Daniel stood.

“Mom, you need to leave.”

“I came to see my son.”

“You weren't invited.”

She looked around.

Susan wouldn't meet her eyes.

Neither would Eric.

Then she saw me.

And Elena.

Leo was in my arms.

Margaret's face changed.

For one second, I saw genuine pain.

She walked toward us.

I stepped between her and Leo.

She stopped.

“I just want to see him.”

“No.”

“Michael.”

“No.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You've punished me enough.”

“This isn't punishment.”

“What is it?”

“A boundary.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You sound like your wife.”

“Good.”

That answer surprised her.

Elena remained silent.

Margaret looked past me.

“Elena, please.”

My wife finally spoke.

“What do you want me to say?”

“That you forgive me.”

Elena considered it.

“I do.”

Margaret's face brightened.

Then Elena continued.

“But forgiveness doesn't mean access.”

The hope disappeared.

“I don't hate you, Margaret.”

Elena's voice was calm.

“But I will never put Leo in a situation where he can be treated the way you treated Michael.”

Margaret looked at me.

“You told her things about me?”

“I didn't have to.”

Silence.

Then Daniel approached.

“Mom.”

She turned.

“You need to go.”

For once, nobody defended her.

Nobody begged Daniel to reconsider.

Nobody told Elena to be polite.

Nobody told me to keep the peace.

Margaret looked around the room and finally understood.

Control only works when people cooperate.

We had stopped cooperating.

She left.

No screaming.

No dramatic scene.

May you like

Just a door closing behind her.

And somehow that was more powerful than any argument we'd ever had.
