Chapter 6 - My Brother Chose a Side

Daniel came to the house Monday evening.

I almost didn't let him inside.

He stood on the porch holding a cardboard box.

“What is that?”

“Mom's stuff.”

“Why bring it here?”

“Because some of it isn't hers.”

He opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Printed screenshots.

Copies of text messages.

Pictures of Elena sleeping.

Pictures of dirty dishes.

Pictures of laundry piled on the couch.

All carefully collected to make my wife look neglectful.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I found these in Mom's guest room.”

I picked up one photograph.

Elena asleep on the couch with Leo against her chest.

The caption beneath it read:

BABY UNSUPERVISED WHILE MOTHER SLEEPS.

Except Elena's arm was around him.

Margaret had turned tenderness into evidence.

Another picture showed bottles in the sink.

Another showed Elena crying.

Another showed our bedroom messy.

“What was she planning?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Yes, you do.”

He looked at me.

“I think she wanted you to leave Elena.”

The room became quiet.

“She told me you were unhappy.”

“I never said that.”

“I know.”

“Did you believe her?”

“At first.”

That hurt.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“She’s our mother.”

“So?”

“I thought she was worried about you.”

“And when did you realize she wasn't?”

“Saturday.”

“When Elena collapsed?”

He nodded.

“You still sat there.”

His face crumpled.

“I know.”

I wanted to throw him out.

Part of me wanted him gone forever.

Then Elena walked into the room.

She looked at Daniel.

“You were scared of her too.”

He started crying.

Not loudly.

He simply nodded.

That was the first time I understood something uncomfortable.

Margaret had spent decades training us.

Guilt.

Silence.

Obedience.

Family loyalty meant protecting Margaret from consequences.

Daniel had never escaped.

Neither had I.

Until now.

“You want to help?”

He nodded.

“Then tell the truth.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

He agreed.

That decision would cost him his relationship with our mother.

But it would also save mine.
