Chapter 6 - The Person Behind The Betrayal

I stared at the frozen image on the screen.
I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t move.
Because the person standing beside Vanessa in the video…
Was my own brother.
Daniel.
My business partner.
My closest friend since college.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who held Ethan when he was born.
The man who called Lily his little princess.
For years, I trusted him more than anyone.
And now…
I was watching him help destroy my children’s lives.
I replayed the video.
Again.
And again.
Maybe I was wrong.
Maybe there was another explanation.
But every time…
The truth became harder to ignore.
The video showed Vanessa sitting in the kitchen.
Daniel was standing across from her.
“You’re sure Michael won’t find out?”
Daniel asked.
Vanessa smiled.
“He trusts me.”
“He always has.”
My stomach turned.
Daniel looked nervous.
“What about the children?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“They’re just kids.”
“They won’t understand what’s happening.”
I stopped the video.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
The room felt smaller.
My own house suddenly felt like a stranger’s home.
Then I heard footsteps.
I quickly closed the laptop.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“You found it.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
I looked at her.
“Why?”
For the first time…
She didn’t pretend.
She didn’t act innocent.
She simply stared at me.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
She walked closer.
“Because you were never home.”
My expression changed.
“You hurt our children because I worked?”
“No.”
Her voice became sharper.
“Because you made me invisible.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So this is revenge?”
She looked away.
“This was supposed to be temporary.”
“Temporary?”
“You were supposed to lose control.”
“You were supposed to look unstable.”
I felt a chill.
“You wanted custody.”
She said nothing.
That was my answer.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel had a plan.”
My eyes narrowed.
“What plan?”
May you like
Vanessa smiled.
“The one that was going to take everything from you.”
