Chapter 1 - The Moment I Came Home Too Early

I never thought the safest place in the world for my children would become the place they feared the most.
For six years, I believed I had built the perfect family.
A beautiful house.
A successful career.
A loving wife.
Two amazing children who called me Dad every morning with the biggest smiles.
I worked long hours because I wanted to give Lily and Ethan everything I never had.
I wanted them to feel protected.
I wanted them to know they were loved.
But that afternoon changed everything.
I was supposed to be at the office until late evening.
A business meeting had been canceled unexpectedly.
For once, I decided to surprise my family.
I remember smiling as I drove home.
I even stopped at the bakery near our neighborhood.
I bought Lily’s favorite strawberry cake.
I bought Ethan the chocolate cookies he always begged for.
I imagined their faces when I walked through the door.
I imagined my wife Vanessa smiling and saying she was happy I came home early.
But the second I opened the front door…
Something felt wrong.
The mansion was completely silent.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
Silent in a way that made my stomach tighten.
Then I heard it.
A small voice.
A terrified voice.
“Dad…”
My hand froze on the doorknob.
“Dad, help us!”
The cake box slipped from my fingers.
I ran.
I crossed the marble hallway faster than I had ever run in my life.
And then I saw them.
My six-year-old daughter Lily was pressed against the living room wall.
Her tiny body was shaking.
Her eyes were full of tears.
My son Ethan was hiding beneath the coffee table.
His arms covered his head.
And standing over them…
Was Vanessa.
My wife.
The woman I trusted more than anyone.
She was wearing a black satin dress.
Her hair was perfectly styled.
But her face…
Her face was filled with anger.
Her hand was raised.
A wooden hanger was tightly gripped in her fingers.
“You ungrateful little brats!”
I felt something inside me break.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t ask questions.
I moved.
I grabbed Vanessa’s arm before the hanger could fall.
She looked at me in shock.
“Michael?”
Her voice suddenly became softer.
Almost innocent.
But I had already seen everything.
I pushed the hanger away.
“Get away from them.”
My voice sounded different.
Even to me.
Cold.
Dangerous.
Vanessa stepped back.
“You scared me!”
I ignored her.
I dropped to my knees beside my children.
Ethan immediately crawled into my arms.
His small body was trembling.
“Daddy…”
He couldn’t even finish the sentence.
Lily ran toward me.
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
She held on like she was afraid I would disappear.
I checked their faces.
Their arms.
Their shoulders.
Then I saw it.
The bruises.
My hands started shaking.
Dark marks covered Ethan’s skin.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do to my son?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“They were being impossible.”
“They refused to listen.”
“They needed discipline.”
I stared at her.
“Discipline?”
My voice almost cracked.
“You call this discipline?”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“You always make them think they can do whatever they want.”
“They need someone stricter.”
I looked down at my children.
And for the first time…
I saw something I had ignored for months.
Fear.
My children were afraid of my wife.
Then Lily grabbed my shirt.
She pulled me closer.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Daddy…”
I lowered my head.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“This wasn’t the first time.”
My entire body went still.
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What did you say?”
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“She gets angry when you’re gone.”
“She tells us not to tell you.”
My heart started beating faster.
“How long?”
Lily looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan suddenly whispered.
“Mommy said nobody would believe us.”
I felt a wave of anger hit me.
Nobody would believe them?
My own children thought they had no one?
I slowly stood.
I looked at Vanessa.
And she looked nervous for the first time.
May you like
Because she realized something.
The children had finally spoken.
