Chapter 7 - HE HAD BUILT HER INTO THE CRIME

Claire stared at the screen.
The company was called Bennett Strategic Consulting.
Her maiden name.
Her old email address.
Her Social Security number.
Her signature.
Everything looked real.
“That’s identity theft,” Claire said.
Natalie nodded slowly.
“Potentially.”
“Potentially?”
“We need to prove you didn’t authorize it.”
Claire stood.
“I didn’t even know it existed!”
“I believe you.”
“But?”
“But investigators don’t work on belief.”
The $900,000 had entered the company in six transfers.
Most of it was gone.
Paid to shell companies.
Consultants.
Property accounts.
One transfer went directly to Cole Meridian Holdings.
Ryan’s company.
Claire finally understood his threat.
He hadn’t just stolen money.
He had built an escape route.
If the scheme collapsed, he could say Claire was involved.
Worse—he had built evidence to support it.
Madison arrived carrying a laptop.
“I found something.”
She looked exhausted.
Claire almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Madison set the computer down.
“I still had access to Ryan’s shared calendar.”
Natalie looked at her sharply.
“You didn’t hack anything?”
“No. He never removed me.”
She opened a list of appointments.
Private meetings.
Banks.
Law firms.
One repeated name stood out.
D. Mercer
Claire frowned.
“Who’s that?”
Madison swallowed.
“David Mercer. Senior partner at the company.”
Natalie looked up.
“Hawthorne Financial?”
Madison nodded.
Claire remembered David.
Sixty years old.
Friendly.
Polished.
He had hugged Ryan at the promotion dinner.
Called him “the future of the firm.”
Madison opened emails.
Ryan and David had been communicating for months.
Not openly.
Through private addresses.
One email read:
Once you’re VP, we’ll have access without triggering compliance.
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“He wasn’t doing this alone.”
“No.”
Another message:
Keep your wife attached to Bennett Strategic. If anything goes wrong, we need distance.
Claire stopped.
“He knew about me.”
Madison nodded.
Natalie photographed the screen.
“This goes to investigators.”
Claire looked at Madison.
“Why are you helping me?”
Madison’s eyes filled.
“Because he lied to me.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Madison touched her stomach.
“Because yesterday, when everything fell apart, Ryan called me.”
Claire waited.
“He didn’t ask if I was okay.”
Madison’s voice cracked.
“He told me to say the baby wasn’t his.”
Claire’s anger shifted.
Not forgiveness.
But recognition.
Madison had been used too.
“What did you say?”
“I told him to go to hell.”
Claire almost smiled.
Then Madison continued.
“And then David Mercer called me.”
Natalie froze.
“What did he want?”
“He offered me money.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand dollars.”
Claire stared at her.
“For what?”
Madison opened an audio file on her phone.
David’s recorded voice filled the room.
“Take the money, leave the state, and stop talking.”
Then another voice appeared in the background.
Ryan’s.
“Tell her if she refuses, she’ll regret it.”
Claire looked at Natalie.
This was no longer divorce drama.
It was something much bigger.

And Ryan was no longer just scared.
He was dangerous.
