Chapter 1 - THE TOAST THAT KILLED THE PARTY

Ryan Cole thought his wife was about to praise him.

That was his first mistake.

His second was smiling when Claire reached for the microphone.

The ballroom at the Lexington Hotel was packed with Ryan’s coworkers, executives, clients, friends, and family. Two hundred people had gathered to celebrate his promotion to Regional Vice President of Hawthorne Financial.

A giant screen behind the stage displayed his face beside the words:

CONGRATULATIONS, RYAN COLE!

Ryan stood near the head table in a tailored navy suit, soaking up the attention like sunlight.

Then Claire walked onto the stage.

She wore a simple black dress.

No flashy jewelry.

No nervous smile.

Just a champagne glass in one hand and the microphone in the other.

Ryan grinned.

“There’s my beautiful wife.”

People applauded.

Claire looked at him.

For twelve years, she had known every version of that smile.

The charming one.

The apologetic one.

The lying one.

Tonight, she was looking at the last one.

Ryan raised his glass.

“Go easy on me, babe.”

Laughter moved through the room.

Claire smiled.

“Oh, I will.”

Something in her voice made Ryan’s mother stop clapping.

Claire turned toward the crowd.

“When Ryan told me about tonight, he said this promotion was the biggest achievement of his life.”

Ryan nodded proudly.

“It is.”

Claire glanced toward a table near the stage.

A young blonde woman in a red dress immediately looked down.

Her name was Madison Reed.

Ryan’s executive assistant.

Claire continued.

“So I thought this would be the perfect place to recognize all the people who helped him get here.”

Ryan’s smile widened.

His boss, Gregory Hawthorne, lifted his glass.

Claire nodded toward him.

“Mr. Hawthorne, thank you for believing in my husband.”

Gregory smiled.

“My pleasure.”

“And to everyone on Ryan’s team, thank you for covering for his late meetings.”

A few employees exchanged confused looks.

Ryan’s expression changed slightly.

“Claire…”

She ignored him.

“And most importantly…”

Claire turned toward Madison.

“I’d like to congratulate Ryan’s assistant.”

Madison froze.

Claire’s smile disappeared.

“Not only for helping my husband with his career…”

The room became quiet.

“…but also for carrying his baby.”

Someone dropped a fork.

The sound hit the floor like a gunshot.

Ryan went white.

Madison’s hand instinctively moved toward her stomach.

Claire watched it.

Then she looked back at Ryan.

“Surprise.”

Nobody moved.

Ryan whispered, “What the hell are you doing?”

Claire raised her glass.

“Finishing your announcement.”

Ryan stepped toward the stage.

“Give me the microphone.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“You had six months to tell me the truth.”

Ryan’s boss slowly lowered his drink.

Ryan glanced around the room.

“Everyone, my wife is upset. There’s obviously been some misunderstanding.”

Claire laughed once.

Cold.

Short.

“A misunderstanding?”

She reached into her purse.

Ryan stopped moving.

Claire pulled out a thick white envelope.

“I have hotel receipts.”

Another paper.

“Credit card statements.”

Another.

“Photos.”

Madison began crying.

Ryan stared at Claire.

Then she pulled out one final document.

“And the prenatal appointment you paid for last Tuesday.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Ryan’s father stood up.

“Son…”

Ryan snapped, “Dad, sit down.”

Claire stepped closer to the edge of the stage.

“Oh, we’re not done yet.”

Ryan looked at her with something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Claire held up another envelope.

“Because while Ryan was getting promoted tonight…”

She dropped it onto the table in front of him.

“…I was filing for divorce.”

Ryan stared at the papers.

Claire leaned toward the microphone.

“And your bags are already outside.”

The ballroom exploded.

But Gregory Hawthorne wasn’t watching Claire anymore.

May you like

He was staring at Ryan.

And the look on his face said Ryan’s marriage might not be the only thing ending tonight.
