Chapter 13 - THE REAL ARCHITECT

Ryan was arrested.
Jessica was taken to the hospital.
Claire thought she would finally sleep.
She didn’t.
At six the next morning, investigators called.
The flash drive contained documents.
Some real.
Some altered.
Some impossible to verify.
But one file mattered.
A recording.
Gregory’s voice.
“We need a structure that keeps the company clean.”
Another man replied.
David.
“What about Ryan?”
“He wants the promotion badly enough to do anything.”
Claire listened twice.
Then a third time.
Gregory had denied knowing about Northstar.
Now he sounded involved.
The FBI questioned him.
Gregory insisted the recording was manipulated.
Then David Mercer reappeared.
Alive.
He walked into a police station seventy miles away.
The blood in his car had been his, from a self-inflicted cut.
He had staged his disappearance because he believed Ryan would kill him.
And David wanted immunity.
His statement changed everything.
Northstar had started four years earlier.
Not with Ryan.
With Gregory.
According to David, Hawthorne Financial had lost millions through a disastrous private investment.
Gregory hid the losses.
Then created a scheme to temporarily move client money.
Temporary became permanent.
David helped.
Later, Ryan discovered it.
Instead of reporting them, he demanded in.
His promotion was payment.
Claire felt sick.
“So Ryan really was being rewarded.”
Natalie nodded.
“For silence.”
Ryan had then created his own side network.
Stealing from the thieves.
Building Cole Meridian.
Using Claire as a shield.
It was corruption inside corruption.
Gregory was arrested two days later.
David became a cooperating witness.
The company froze accounts.
Clients panicked.
News crews camped outside Claire’s house.
And Madison disappeared.
Claire called repeatedly.
No answer.
Then she received an email.
I’m sorry. I can’t do this anymore.
Attached was a letter.
Madison explained she was leaving Ohio to stay with her sister.
She also admitted one final thing.
She had known Ryan was married.
Claire stared at the sentence.
All the sympathy she had slowly built cracked.
Madison continued:
He told me you were cruel to him. He said you controlled him. I wanted to believe him because believing him made what I was doing easier.
Claire read that line twice.
At least it was honest.
The letter continued.
I didn’t know about the fraud. I didn’t know about Jessica. But I knew I was sleeping with another woman’s husband. I’m sorry.
Claire closed the laptop.
Some apologies didn’t fix things.
They simply named the damage correctly.
That evening, Natalie called.
“The divorce hearing has been moved up.”
“Good.”
“There’s one problem.”
Claire sighed.
“What now?”
“Ryan is contesting everything.”
“Of course he is.”
“He’s claiming the public humiliation destroyed his career.”
Claire laughed.
“He committed federal crimes.”
“I know.”
“And somehow this is my fault?”
“He’s asking for spousal support.”
Claire went silent.
Then she started laughing.
Hard.
For the first time in weeks, she couldn’t stop.
Ryan had lost his job.
His reputation.
His freedom.
And now he wanted money from her.
Claire wiped tears from her eyes.
“Tell him I’ll see him in court.”
May you like
Because this time, there would be no microphone.
Only evidence.
