Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE COULD TALK HIS WAY OUT

Ryan grabbed the microphone.

“Enough.”

Claire didn’t fight him for it.

She simply stepped back.

That scared him more.

Ryan forced a laugh.

“Everyone, I apologize. Clearly, Claire and I are dealing with a private issue.”

“A private issue?” Claire said.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Not here.”

“Why not? You did plenty of private things in public hotels.”

A few people gasped.

One of Ryan’s coworkers covered his mouth to hide a smile.

Ryan lowered his voice.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Claire stared at him.

There it was.

The sentence he always used whenever she challenged him.

You’re overreacting.

You’re emotional.

You’re embarrassing yourself.

For years, those words had worked.

Tonight, they didn’t.

“No, Ryan. I’m embarrassing you.”

Madison suddenly stood.

“I’m leaving.”

Claire looked at her.

Madison was twenty-seven, beautiful, shaking, and visibly terrified.

Ryan immediately moved toward her.

“Madison, wait.”

That movement said more than any confession could have.

Claire saw Ryan’s mother close her eyes.

Gregory Hawthorne stood.

“Ryan.”

Ryan froze.

His boss rarely raised his voice.

He didn’t need to.

Gregory had built the company from a three-person office into a national firm. He was sixty-two, controlled, and almost impossible to read.

Now he looked disgusted.

“Is she telling the truth?”

Ryan swallowed.

“It’s complicated.”

Gregory’s expression hardened.

“That wasn’t my question.”

Madison wiped tears from her face.

Ryan looked around.

Every person in the ballroom was waiting.

He had spent ten years building an image.

Loyal husband.

Disciplined executive.

Family man.

Mentor.

Leader.

All of it had collapsed in less than three minutes.

Ryan pointed at Claire.

“She went through my private accounts.”

Claire laughed.

“Your response to cheating is that I caught you wrong?”

“Stop twisting my words.”

“You slept with your assistant.”

Madison shouted, “He told me you were separated!”

Claire turned.

For the first time, she looked genuinely surprised.

Ryan’s head snapped toward Madison.

“Don’t.”

Madison stared at him.

“You told me she was only staying in the house because of the kids.”

Claire’s face changed.

They didn’t have kids.

The entire table heard it.

Claire slowly looked at Ryan.

“What kids?”

Madison went pale.

Ryan whispered, “Madison, shut up.”

Claire stepped off the stage.

“No. Keep talking.”

Madison’s eyes filled.

“He said you had two children.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Claire felt something inside her turn cold.

Ryan had not simply cheated.

He had created another life.

Another version of her.

One where she was distant.

Difficult.

A wife refusing to let go.

“You told her we had children?” Claire asked.

Ryan reached for her arm.

“Come outside.”

Claire pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

Security moved closer.

Ryan noticed.

So did everyone else.

Gregory took the microphone from Ryan.

“This dinner is over.”

Ryan stared at him.

“Gregory—”

“My office. Eight tomorrow morning.”

Ryan’s face fell.

Gregory added, “Do not contact any clients tonight.”

That sounded less like a warning and more like a termination.

But Claire barely heard it.

Madison was looking at her.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

Ryan’s face went rigid.

“Madison.”

She ignored him.

Her voice shook.

“He wasn’t planning to leave you for me.”

Claire frowned.

Madison wiped her tears.

May you like

“He was planning to leave both of us.”

And suddenly, the affair wasn’t the biggest secret in the room.
