Chapter 6 - THE MONEY HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Claire’s father, Thomas Bennett, had not been rich.

But he had been careful.

He spent forty years running a hardware store outside Columbus, Ohio. When he died, he left Claire a small rental property, retirement savings, and one piece of advice.

“Never let anyone make you feel stupid for asking where your money went.”

Claire had smiled when he said it.

Ryan had been standing beside her.

Now the memory made her sick.

Natalie pulled the estate records.

The rental property had sold for $610,000.

After taxes and fees, Claire had placed $480,000 into a joint investment account.

Exactly the amount Ryan later transferred.

“He took my inheritance.”

Natalie shook her head.

“He may have taken more.”

They found another signature.

A refinancing document.

Claire stared at it.

“That’s not my signature.”

Natalie looked closer.

“You’re sure?”

“I know my own handwriting.”

The signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Ryan had practiced.

Claire felt rage rise through her.

“This was two years ago.”

“Yes.”

“So while he was sleeping beside me…”

“He may have been forging financial documents.”

Claire stood so quickly the chair slid backward.

“I want him arrested.”

Natalie’s voice remained calm.

“We need proof.”

“I’m looking at proof.”

“We need admissible proof.”

Claire hated how reasonable she sounded.

At 6:00 that evening, Ryan called.

Claire declined.

He called again.

Declined.

Then a text appeared.

We need to talk before you make this worse.

Claire laughed.

Before she made it worse.

Another message arrived.

You don’t understand what you’re doing.

Then:

Your father’s money wasn’t stolen.

Claire stared.

She had never accused him by text.

Which meant Ryan already knew what she had discovered.

Natalie saw the message.

“Don’t respond.”

Claire didn’t.

Ryan called again.

Then again.

Finally, he left a voicemail.

Claire played it on speaker.

Ryan’s voice was low.

“Claire, listen to me. You’re angry. I get it. I screwed up with Madison, okay? But the money is different. There are things you don’t understand. Your dad’s investment was going nowhere. I moved it because I was building something bigger for us.”

Claire whispered, “Us?”

The voicemail continued.

“And before Natalie fills your head with criminal nonsense, remember something. You signed those documents.”

Claire looked at Natalie.

The recording continued.

“You may not remember signing them, but you did.”

Claire’s face hardened.

Ryan was laying the foundation.

If the forged documents surfaced, he would claim she signed them.

Then came the final sentence.

“And Claire… if you destroy me, you destroy yourself too.”

The voicemail ended.

Natalie was quiet.

Claire looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

But an hour later, they got the answer.

A forensic accountant found a company registered under Claire’s name.

One she had never created.

It had received $900,000 in transfers.

And on paper, Claire appeared to own all of it.
