CHAPTER 4: The Shadow Inside The House

Nathan didn’t remember dropping his phone.

One second, he was holding it.

The next second, it was lying on the floor beside him.

The picture stayed burned into his mind.

Emma.

Sleeping peacefully.

Her small hand wrapped around her stuffed rabbit.

The pink blanket Claire bought before she died pulled up to her chin.

Someone had taken that photo.

Someone had stood inside his house.

Someone had watched his daughter sleep.

Nathan moved faster than he had ever moved in his life.

He ran upstairs.

“Emma!”

His voice echoed through the hallway.

The bedroom door flew open.

Emma woke up instantly.

“Daddy?”

Nathan rushed to her bed.

He grabbed her and pulled her into his arms.

“What happened?” she asked, frightened.

“Nothing.”

But his voice betrayed him.

Everything had happened.

Everything.

Lucas woke up in the next room.

“Dad?”

Nathan looked at his two children.

The two people Claire had died trying to protect.

He forced himself to stay calm.

“Both of you come with me.”

Emma looked confused.

“Where are we going?”

“Downstairs.”

“Why?”

Nathan looked around the room.

The closet.

The window.

The dark corners.

Every place someone could hide.

“Because I need to make sure my family is safe.”

Emma held his hand.

“Is Vanessa coming back?”

Nathan didn’t answer.

And that silence told her enough.

Twenty minutes later, Nathan stood in the living room with every light turned on.

The police were on their way.

He checked every door.

Every window.

Every lock.

Nothing was broken.

Nothing looked disturbed.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Whoever entered the house didn’t force their way in.

They had a key.

Or someone gave them access.

Nathan looked toward the staircase.

The answer was obvious.

Vanessa.

She had lived there.

She knew every corner.

But was she working alone?

His phone rang.

Detective Mark Reynolds.

Nathan answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.”

Mark didn’t respond right away.

That worried Nathan.

“Mark?”

“Nathan, I need you to listen carefully.”

“What?”

“The photo you received…”

“Yes.”

“It wasn’t taken tonight.”

Nathan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“I checked the image information.”

Nathan walked slowly across the room.

“And?”

“It was taken three days ago.”

Nathan stopped.

Three days.

That made no sense.

“Mark, I just received it.”

“I know.”

“Then someone saved it and waited?”

“That’s what it looks like.”

Nathan looked at the picture again.

A sick feeling grew inside him.

This wasn’t just intimidation.

This was planned.

Someone had been watching them for days.

“Mark…”

“Yes?”

“How much of Claire’s investigation did you know about?”

Silence.

Too long.

Nathan noticed.

“Mark?”

“I didn’t know she was investigating anything.”

“Are you sure?”

The detective sighed.

“Nathan, what are you asking?”

“I’m asking if Claire trusted you.”

Another pause.

Then Mark said quietly:

“She stopped trusting almost everyone near the end.”

Nathan looked down.

“Why?”

“I thought it was grief.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“No.”

He whispered.

“It wasn’t.”

The police arrived fifteen minutes later.

They searched the entire house.

No signs of forced entry.

No fingerprints.

No clear evidence.

Exactly what someone wanted.

Officer Daniels walked back into the living room.

“Mr. Walker, whoever did this knew what they were doing.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You mean they planned it?”

“Yes.”

“Could it be someone who lived here?”

The officer hesitated.

“Possibly.”

That one word was enough.

Nathan looked toward the hallway.

Vanessa’s bedroom door was closed.

For the first time since marrying her, he wondered who she really was.

At midnight, Nathan made another discovery.

He went back into Claire’s laptop.

The hidden folder contained more files than he originally saw.

There was a password-protected document.

He tried everything.

Their anniversary.

Their children’s names.

Claire’s favorite phrase.

Nothing worked.

Then he remembered something.

Claire loved leaving clues.

She always said:

“The truth hides where people stop looking.”

Nathan looked through the documents again.

One file caught his attention.

A bank statement.

A date.

Two days before Claire died.

A withdrawal.

$500,000.

The money had been transferred to a private account.

The account holder’s name was hidden.

But the bank code was visible.

Nathan recognized it.

It belonged to Ethan.

His brother.

Nathan stepped back.

“No…”

His voice cracked.

He didn’t want to believe it.

He couldn’t.

But the evidence kept leading back to the same people.

Ethan.

Vanessa.

The trust fund.

Claire’s death.

All connected.

Then the laptop made a sound.

A notification appeared.

An old scheduled email.

Sent by Claire.

Scheduled for exactly two years after her death.

Nathan opened it.

The message was short.

Only one sentence.

“Nathan, if you found this, it means they failed to stop you.”

His hands shook.

A second line appeared.

“But be careful. The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

Another attachment appeared.

A video file.

Recorded the morning Claire died.

Nathan pressed play.

The video showed Claire sitting in her car.

Crying.

Whispering.

“I know who is behind this.”

Nathan leaned closer.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“It’s someone in my family.”

Then the video shook.

A shadow appeared outside the window.

Claire looked terrified.

She whispered:

“Oh no…”

The recording ended.

Nathan sat frozen.

Because just before the video stopped…

he heard a voice outside the car.

A voice he recognized.

A voice that belonged to someone he loved.

Someone who had been pretending to help him all this time.

Nathan replayed the final seconds.

Again.

And again.

Then he heard it.

The words that changed everything.

“Claire… you should have listened when I warned you.”

Nathan’s face turned pale.

Because the voice belonged to…

May you like

his own father.
