CHAPTER 2: The Video Claire Left Behind

Nathan watched the screen without blinking.

He was afraid to move.

Afraid that if he looked away for even one second, the truth would disappear.

His wife’s face filled the laptop screen.

The woman he had buried two years ago.

The woman he still dreamed about every night.

Claire looked exhausted.

Not the Claire everyone remembered.

Not the smiling woman who decorated their house for Christmas, sang loudly while cooking dinner, and chased their children around the backyard.

This Claire looked scared.

Like someone who knew she was running out of time.

“Nathan…”

Her voice cracked.

“If you’re watching this, I need you to listen carefully.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“I don’t have much time.”

His fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.

“What were you hiding from me, Claire?”

The video continued.

“I know this is going to sound impossible. I know people will tell you I was paranoid.”

Claire looked away from the camera.

“But I wasn’t.”

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“Vanessa is not who she says she is.”

Nathan felt his stomach twist.

He had expected many things.

An affair.

A financial problem.

A family argument.

But not this.

Not the name of the woman who had held his children after Claire died.

The woman who had cried with him at the funeral.

The woman who told him she would always protect Emma and Lucas.

Claire continued.

“She came into our lives pretending to be my friend.”

Nathan frowned.

Friend?

Vanessa had always told him she met Claire through a charity event.

She said they became close because they both cared about helping children.

But Claire’s expression told a different story.

“She knew things about me that nobody else knew.”

The video shook slightly.

Nathan realized Claire had been holding the camera herself.

“She knew about the trust account.”

Nathan froze.

The trust account.

The one he and Claire created for their children.

A family account worth millions.

Money that was supposed to protect Emma and Lucas if something happened to both parents.

Claire lowered her voice.

“Someone has been trying to access the money.”

Nathan’s heart began racing.

“What?”

He paused the video.

His mind started connecting pieces.

The missing documents.

The strange emails.

The bank notifications Claire had mentioned before her death.

At the time, he thought she was stressed.

He thought she was overwhelmed.

He thought she was looking for problems where none existed.

Now he realized something terrifying.

Claire had been investigating.

And she had been doing it alone.

Nathan pressed play again.

“Please, Nathan. If anything happens to me, check the account records.”

Claire swallowed hard.

“Someone close to us is involved.”

The screen went dark.

Then another file opened automatically.

A folder filled with scanned documents appeared.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Private messages.

Nathan clicked the first file.

His eyes widened.

A transfer.

$2,500,000.

Moved from the children’s trust account.

The destination?

A company called Sterling Holdings.

Nathan knew that name.

Everyone in their city knew it.

It was one of the biggest investment firms in the area.

And the owner was…

Vanessa’s father.

Richard Sterling.

Nathan sat back slowly.

“No…”

He whispered.

Because if the documents were real, then his wife had discovered someone was stealing from their children.

And the person closest to her might have known.

A sound suddenly came from the hallway.

Nathan quickly closed the laptop.

He turned.

Vanessa was standing there.

Watching him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

But it wasn’t the warm smile Nathan knew.

It was forced.

Cold.

“What are you doing?”

Nathan slowly stood up.

“What are you doing awake?”

“I asked first.”

He stared at her.

“I found Claire’s laptop.”

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

Just for a second.

But Nathan saw it.

“You shouldn’t go through her things.”

“She left something for me.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Nathan stepped closer.

“A message.”

Vanessa became completely still.

“What kind of message?”

Nathan studied her carefully.

Two years.

Two years of trusting this woman.

Two years of letting her sleep in the same house as his children.

Two years of believing she was the person who helped him survive losing Claire.

But now every memory felt different.

Every conversation.

Every hug.

Every tear at Claire’s funeral.

All of it felt like a performance.

“Why did Claire write your name?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Nathan’s voice became harder.

“She told me not to trust you.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

A quiet, nervous laugh.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

She stepped forward.

“Claire was under a lot of pressure before she died.”

“Pressure from who?”

Vanessa looked away.

“From everyone.”

“No.”

Nathan shook his head.

“From someone.”

The silence between them became dangerous.

Finally, Vanessa sighed.

“Nathan, you’re grieving. You’re angry. You’re looking for someone to blame.”

“My daughter remembered seeing you near Claire’s car.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a moment.

But enough.

Nathan noticed.

“You told me Emma was confused.”

“She was a child.”

“She knew your name.”

“She heard adults talking.”

“She knew you were there.”

Vanessa’s eyes became sharper.

“Be careful, Nathan.”

The warning in her voice surprised him.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No.”

She smiled again.

“I’m telling you that chasing ghosts can destroy your family.”

Nathan looked at her.

“My family?”

He pointed upstairs.

“My children were crying on the floor tonight because of you.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“They need discipline.”

Nathan almost couldn’t believe what he heard.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“They need protection from you.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

Then she turned around and walked away.

But before leaving the doorway, she stopped.

“You really want the truth?”

Nathan said nothing.

Vanessa looked over her shoulder.

“Then ask yourself why Claire never told you anything while she was alive.”

The words hit harder than Nathan expected.

Because that question had haunted him too.

Why had Claire hidden things?

Why had she investigated alone?

Why had she recorded that video instead of simply telling him?

Nathan waited until Vanessa disappeared.

Then he reopened the laptop.

There was one more file.

One he hadn’t noticed before.

A photo.

Taken the night Claire died.

Nathan opened it.

His blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Claire’s car beside the road.

The accident scene.

But in the reflection of the car window…

there was someone standing behind it.

Someone watching.

Someone who should not have been there.

Nathan zoomed in.

His hands began shaking.

Because the person in the reflection was not Vanessa.

It was someone he trusted even more.

Someone who had comforted him after Claire’s funeral.

Someone who had promised to help protect his children.

Nathan whispered one name.

And suddenly understood.

May you like

Claire’s death was never an accident.
