CHAPTER 11: The Father Who Chose The Lie

The gun in Thomas Walker’s hand didn’t shake.

That was the part Nathan couldn’t understand.

His father had always been the calm one.

The man who fixed broken toys when Nathan was a child.

The man who stayed up all night when Nathan had a fever.

The man who told him:

“Family is the only thing you can always trust.”

But now that same man was standing in front of him.

Pointing a gun at him.

At his own son.

“Dad…”

Nathan’s voice cracked.

“What are you doing?”

Thomas looked at him.

For a moment, Nathan saw pain in his father’s eyes.

Real pain.

Then it disappeared.

“You should have stopped looking.”

Nathan held Emma tighter.

“She was your granddaughter.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“You threatened her.”

“I never wanted Emma hurt.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You brought a gun into a room with her.”

Thomas looked away.

“Things went further than I planned.”

“Planned?”

Nathan’s anger exploded.

“You planned all of this?”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t pretend he’s the only one responsible.”

Nathan looked at her.

His eyes were filled with hatred.

“You used my children.”

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“I did what I had to do.”

“You beat them.”

“They needed control.”

“No.”

Nathan’s voice became dangerously calm.

“They needed protection from monsters like you.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Careful.”

“No.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“You spent two years pretending to be their family.”

He looked at Thomas.

“And you knew.”

Thomas lowered the gun slightly.

“Nathan…”

“Did you know what she did?”

Silence.

That was enough.

Nathan’s heart broke.

“You knew.”

Thomas looked down.

“I knew Vanessa had a temper.”

“And you still let her near them?”

“I was trying to keep everything together.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“You were protecting a secret.”

Emma was still holding onto Nathan.

Her small hands were shaking.

“Daddy…”

Nathan looked down.

“I’m here.”

“Is Grandpa bad?”

The question destroyed him.

Because how could he answer?

How could he tell a child that sometimes the people who say they love you are the ones who hurt you most?

Nathan looked at Thomas.

Thomas couldn’t meet Emma’s eyes.

That told Nathan everything.

Daniel suddenly moved.

A quick step.

A distraction.

Thomas turned.

And in that second, Nathan grabbed Emma and pulled her behind him.

Daniel rushed forward.

The gun fired.

The sound exploded through the warehouse.

Emma screamed.

Nathan dropped to the floor.

For a moment, he thought he had been shot.

But then he realized.

Daniel was holding his shoulder.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Daniel!”

“I’m okay.”

He wasn’t.

But he was still standing.

Vanessa shouted:

“Thomas! What are you doing?”

Thomas looked shocked.

Like even he didn’t expect what happened.

“I told you nobody gets hurt.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re getting emotional.”

Thomas looked at her.

And Nathan noticed something.

Fear.

Thomas wasn’t afraid of Nathan.

He was afraid of Vanessa.

That changed everything.

Nathan grabbed Emma’s hand.

“Stay close.”

They moved toward the exit.

But Vanessa blocked the way.

“You’re not leaving.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You lost.”

Vanessa laughed.

“No.”

She pointed toward Thomas.

“Ask him why Claire died.”

Nathan stopped.

Thomas looked away.

Vanessa continued.

“Go ahead.”

“Tell him.”

Thomas remained silent.

Nathan’s voice became low.

“Dad.”

Nothing.

“Tell me.”

Thomas finally spoke.

“I didn’t kill Claire.”

Nathan waited.

“Then what happened?”

Thomas swallowed.

“I tried to convince her to stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Digging.”

Nathan felt sick.

“Why?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Because she didn’t understand what she was fighting.”

“She was fighting criminals.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“She was fighting her own family.”

Nathan stared.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas looked at Emma.

Then at Nathan.

“Claire’s father wasn’t the victim.”

The words hit hard.

“What?”

Thomas continued:

“Your wife inherited the company after her father died.”

Nathan froze.

The room went silent.

“Claire owned everything.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa answered:

“Your wife discovered the company was being destroyed from inside.”

Nathan looked at Thomas.

“By who?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“By her.”

Nathan felt confused.

“No.”

“Claire moved money.”

“No.”

“She hid records.”

“No.”

“She was preparing to expose everyone because she wanted control.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You’re lying.”

Thomas looked at him.

And Nathan saw something that scared him.

Doubt.

Just a small amount.

But it was there.

“Dad…”

Thomas whispered:

“Claire did hide things from you.”

Nathan felt his heart crack.

The one person he believed above everyone else was suddenly uncertain.

Then Thomas reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after Claire died.”

Nathan stared.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid of what it would reveal.”

Nathan took the envelope.

His hands trembled.

Inside was a letter.

Claire’s handwriting.

The first line made his entire body freeze.

“Nathan, if you are reading this, it means my family has already turned against me.”

He kept reading.

“But please remember one thing…”

Nathan’s eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

Because the next sentence destroyed every assumption he had.

“The person everyone thinks betrayed me is actually the only person who tried to save me.”

Nathan slowly looked up.

At Thomas.

At Vanessa.

At Daniel.

Someone in the room was lying.

But who?

Then the warehouse door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stepped inside.

Nathan’s breath disappeared.

Because she looked exactly like Claire.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Same voice.

And she whispered:

“Nathan…”

His knees almost gave out.

“Claire?”

The woman stared at him with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry I let you believe I was dead.”

The world stopped.

Because the truth Nathan had been chasing for two years…

was standing right in front of him.

May you like

Alive.
