CHAPTER 13: The Detective’s Final Move

The room went completely dark.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds that felt like an eternity.
Then Nathan heard it.
A sound.
A quiet click.
A weapon being loaded.
His entire body reacted before his mind could.
He reached for Claire.
Pulled Emma and Lucas behind him.
“Everyone stay down.”
The children screamed softly.
Claire grabbed Nathan’s arm.
“Nathan…”
“I know.”
His voice was low.
But inside, he was terrified.
Because everything had changed again.
The one person he believed was helping him…
was now the person they had to fear.
The lights suddenly flickered back on.
And standing near the doorway was Detective Mark Reynolds.
His gun was pointed at the floor.
Not raised.
Not yet.
But the message was clear.
Everyone in the room understood.
Mark was not there to help.
“Nathan…”
Mark looked tired.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Just tired.
Nathan stared at him.
“You.”
Mark looked away.
“I was hoping you would never find out.”
Nathan felt something break inside him.
For days, Mark had been the one person who seemed honest.
The one person who helped him search for answers.
The one person who listened when everyone else told him to let Claire go.
“You knew.”
Mark didn’t answer.
“You knew Claire was alive.”
“Yes.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“You knew about the hidden room.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the files.”
“Yes.”
Every answer felt like another betrayal.
Nathan stepped forward.
“Why?”
Mark looked at Claire.
“She was never supposed to survive.”
Emma held onto Nathan’s shirt.
The words made him sick.
“What did you do?”
Mark sighed.
“I didn’t plan the accident.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice was cold.
“But you covered it up.”
Mark stayed silent.
Nathan turned toward Claire.
“Explain.”
Claire looked at Mark.
“Two years ago, I discovered my father’s company wasn’t just hiding money.”
She took a breath.
“They were paying people.”
Nathan looked at Mark.
“Police?”
Claire nodded.
“Officials. Investigators. Anyone who could make problems disappear.”
Mark’s face changed.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Claire said.
“I understand perfectly.”
Mark looked angry for the first time.
“You think I wanted this?”
Nathan stepped forward.
“You changed the report.”
Mark looked at him.
“Yes.”
The admission shocked everyone.
“You made my wife’s death look like an accident.”
“I had no choice.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“No choice?”
His voice shook.
“You let me bury her.”
Mark looked down.
“I know.”
“You watched me break.”
“I know.”
“You watched my children grow up without their mother.”
Mark closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Nathan’s anger exploded.
“Then you don’t get to say you had no choice.”
Mark slowly lowered the gun.
“I was trying to protect someone.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Mark looked at Thomas.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mark said:
“Your father.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
Mark nodded.
“Thomas wasn’t the mastermind.”
Thomas looked shocked.
“Why are you saying this now?”
“Because it’s over.”
Mark looked around the room.
“Everyone is finally seeing the truth.”
Nathan stared.
“Then tell us.”
Mark remained silent.
“Tell us everything.”
A long pause.
Then Mark spoke.
“The person who controlled this entire operation…”
He looked at Claire.
“…was your father’s lawyer.”
Claire froze.
“My father’s lawyer?”
“Yes.”
Nathan frowned.
“Who?”
Mark looked at the door.
Then whispered:
“Alexander Reed.”
Claire’s face went pale.
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You know him?”
Claire nodded slowly.
“He was my father’s closest advisor.”
Mark continued.
“He built the entire system.”
The hidden companies.
The fake accounts.
The transfers.
Everything.
Nathan felt exhausted.
Another name.
Another betrayal.
Another person hiding behind a smile.
“So why kill Claire?”
Mark answered:
“Because she inherited control.”
Nathan understood.
“They didn’t want her money.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“They wanted her authority.”
Mark nodded.
“Claire was the only person who could legally expose everything.”
Nathan looked at his wife.
“And you disappeared because…”
Claire answered quietly:
“Because Alexander knew I was alive.”
The room went silent.
Nathan looked at her.
“You knew?”
Claire nodded.
“He found me after the crash.”
Nathan’s face changed.
“After the crash?”
“Yes.”
The words were painful.
“I survived.”
She looked down.
“But I was badly injured.”
Nathan swallowed.
“Then why didn’t you come home?”
Claire looked at Emma and Lucas.
“Because Alexander threatened them.”
Nathan felt cold.
“What did he say?”
Claire’s voice shook.
“He said if I returned, he would finish what he started.”
Nathan held his children tighter.
Suddenly, Mark’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
Mark checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?”
Nathan noticed.
“What happened?”
Mark didn’t answer.
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
Claire stepped closer.
“Who is it?”
Mark looked at her.
Then whispered:
“Alexander.”
Nobody spoke.
Mark answered.
“Hello?”
A calm voice came through the speaker.
Even from a distance, Nathan could hear it.
“Detective Reynolds.”
Mark’s face became pale.
“You weren’t supposed to lose control of the situation.”
Nathan looked at Claire.
She understood.
Alexander was listening.
Mark said:
“You told me Claire was gone.”
The voice replied:
“She was supposed to be.”
Nathan felt a chill.
Then Alexander continued:
“But now she’s back.”
A pause.
“Which means we need to clean everything up.”
Mark looked terrified.
“What are you saying?”
The voice became colder.
“You know exactly what I’m saying.”
The call ended.
Mark stared at the phone.
Then slowly looked toward Nathan.
“They’re coming.”
Nathan tightened his grip.
“Who?”
Mark looked at the children.
And whispered:
“Everyone involved.”
The front windows suddenly shattered.
Glass exploded across the room.
Emma screamed.
Someone outside shouted.
Nathan pushed his family down.
The attack had started.
And this time…
May you like
there was nowhere left to run.
