CHAPTER 14: The Last Secret Claire Kept

The first bullet shattered the window.

The second one hit the wall behind Nathan’s head.

Everything happened at once.

Emma screamed.

Lucas covered his ears.

Claire grabbed both children and pulled them behind the heavy wooden table.

“Stay down!”

Nathan dropped beside them.

His heart was pounding.

Not from fear for himself.

From fear for them.

His family had already lost two years together.

He refused to lose another second.

“Mark!”

Nathan looked across the room.

The detective was already moving.

For the first time in days, Nathan saw something he never expected.

Mark was protecting them.

Not because he wanted forgiveness.

Because he knew what he had done.

And he knew what was coming.

“There are three people outside,” Mark said.

Nathan looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I trained them.”

The words made everyone freeze.

Mark swallowed.

“They’re not here to scare us.”

Claire’s face turned pale.

“They’re here to erase the evidence.”

The attack continued.

The sound of footsteps moved around the house.

Slow.

Controlled.

Professional.

These weren’t random criminals.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Nathan looked at Claire.

“How many people know about the files?”

Claire shook her head.

“Only a few.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared him.

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

“Tell me.”

Claire took a deep breath.

“My father’s lawyer knew.”

“Alexander.”

“Yes.”

“Mark.”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Thomas.

“Your father?”

Claire looked down.

“Thomas knew pieces.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I should have told you everything.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Yes.”

The pain in Thomas’s face was real.

But Nathan couldn’t forget.

He had still hidden the truth.

He had still allowed them to suffer.

Claire continued.

“There was one more person.”

Nathan frowned.

“Who?”

Claire looked toward Vanessa.

Everyone followed her eyes.

Vanessa was standing silently near the wall.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“Vanessa.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“What about her?”

Claire stared at her.

“She wasn’t just working for Alexander.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Don’t.”

Claire ignored her.

“She was the person who introduced Alexander to my father.”

Silence.

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

“You knew him before?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Claire continued:

“She wasn’t an outsider.”

Nathan felt sick.

“She was part of the family.”

A loud crash came from the back door.

Someone had entered.

Mark immediately moved.

“Everyone upstairs.”

Nathan looked confused.

“What?”

“There’s a hidden exit.”

Claire looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Mark looked at her.

“Because I helped build it.”

Nathan almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

But there was no time.

They moved quickly.

Nathan carried Lucas.

Claire held Emma’s hand.

Thomas followed behind.

Vanessa stayed where she was.

Nathan stopped.

“You’re not coming.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Nathan…”

“You hurt my children.”

Her eyes changed.

For the first time, she looked less powerful.

More human.

“I made mistakes.”

Nathan stared.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You made choices.”

Then he turned away.

The hidden passage led beneath the house.

A narrow tunnel.

Cold.

Dark.

Claire walked beside Nathan.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Nathan asked:

“Why didn’t you trust me?”

Claire stopped.

The question hurt more than anything.

“Nathan…”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I would have protected you.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Of what they would do to you.”

Nathan looked away.

Claire continued.

“Alexander knew you were my weakness.”

Nathan swallowed.

“He knew I would do anything for you.”

“Yes.”

“And our children.”

Claire nodded.

“I watched you grieve.”

Her voice broke.

“I watched you stand at my grave.”

Nathan’s eyes filled.

“Claire…”

“I wanted to run home.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

She looked at him.

“Because every time I tried, someone was watching.”

The tunnel became silent.

Then Claire reached into her jacket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept one thing hidden.”

Nathan looked at it.

“What is it?”

“The final proof.”

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A contract.

And a handwritten note.

Nathan read the first line.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

Claire looked at him.

“What does it say?”

Nathan couldn’t speak.

He handed her the paper.

Claire read it.

Her face went pale.

Because the document revealed something none of them expected.

Alexander Reed was not the owner of the company.

Not the real one.

The signature at the bottom belonged to someone else.

Someone who had been manipulating everyone from the beginning.

Someone who had access to every account.

Every document.

Every investigation.

Nathan whispered:

“No…”

Claire looked at him.

“You know the name?”

Nathan nodded slowly.

Because the signature belonged to the one person everyone had trusted.

The one person nobody questioned.

The one person who always appeared after the damage was done.

Nathan looked toward Thomas.

Then at Mark.

Then at Claire.

And said:

“The owner of the company…”

His voice broke.

“…is me.”

Everyone froze.

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

Nathan looked at the contract again.

His name was there.

His signature.

His identity.

But he had never signed it.

Someone had used him.

Someone had built the entire operation around him.

Mark’s face changed.

“Oh my God…”

Nathan looked at him.

“What?”

Mark whispered:

“Now I understand.”

“What?”

“Why Claire was killed.”

Nathan waited.

Mark looked terrified.

“Because you weren’t the person they wanted to destroy.”

A pause.

“You were the person they needed to control.”

Before Nathan could answer, the tunnel lights suddenly went out.

A voice echoed from the darkness.

A voice they all recognized.

“Finally.”

Everyone froze.

A man stepped forward.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Smiling.

Alexander Reed.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to discover the truth.”

Nathan stared at him.

“How did you find us?”

Alexander smiled.

“Because I never lost track of you.”

He looked at Claire.

“You really should have stayed dead.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You lose, Alexander.”

He laughed.

“No.”

He looked at Nathan.

“I win the moment he realizes who he really is.”

Nathan frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander smiled.

“Ask your wife what happened the night she met you.”

Claire’s face changed.

Nathan noticed.

“Claire?”

She looked terrified.

Because Alexander had just revealed a secret she had hidden from him.

A secret from before their marriage.

May you like

A secret that could destroy everything.
