Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WANTED MY LIFE

I didn't tell Sarah what Daniel said.
Not yet.
Because I needed the truth.
Not another story.
Not another excuse.
I needed proof.
The next morning, I took Lily and Buster away from the house.
I told Sarah I needed space.
The truth was simpler.
I didn't trust leaving my daughter alone with her.
We stayed at my brother James's house.
The moment he saw Lily, his face changed.
"What happened?"
I didn't answer.
I just handed him the pictures.
He looked through them.
His expression slowly turned from confusion...
To anger.
"She was outside?"
I nodded.
"All night."
James looked at me.
"Michael..."
"I know."
He shook his head.
"No."
"You don't understand."
"This isn't normal."
I looked away.
Because he was right.
This wasn't just betrayal.
This was cruelty.
That afternoon, Daniel arrived.
He brought a folder.
"We checked everything."
I opened it.
Inside were records.
Messages.
Emails.
Phone logs.
And one name appeared again and again.
Brad Miller.
I stared at the pages.
"How?"
Daniel looked serious.
"He's been researching your deployment schedule."
"Your return date."
"Your insurance."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because we both knew.
Brad wasn't guessing.
He was planning.
Then Daniel placed another document on the table.
"Look at this."
I read it.
My hands went cold.
It was a search history.
From Brad's computer.
"How long after death does military insurance pay?"
"How to prove a soldier died overseas."
"How to become legal guardian of child."
I couldn't breathe.
"He wanted my daughter."
Daniel nodded.
"And your money."
I closed my eyes.
The anger inside me became something dangerous.
But then I remembered Lily.
I couldn't lose control.
Not now.
Not when she needed me.
That evening, Sarah called.
I almost ignored it.
But Lily was watching.
"Daddy?"
"Is Mommy okay?"
I answered.
"Yes, sweetheart."
I picked up.
Sarah sounded desperate.
"Michael, please."
"What?"
"I need to explain."
"You already did."
"No."
She started crying.
"I never wanted this."
I looked at Lily sleeping nearby.
"You let him hurt her."
Silence.
Then:
"I know."
Those two words surprised me.
"Sarah..."
"I know."
Her voice broke.
"I saw him put her outside."
Everything stopped.
"What?"
"I saw it."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"You watched?"
She cried.
"I thought he would bring her back."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You thought?"
"I was scared of him."
That was the first honest thing she had said.
"Why?"
A long silence.
Then:
"Because Brad wasn't just lying to you."
"He was lying to me too."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Sarah whispered:
"Michael..."
"Brad didn't meet me by accident."
I stood still.
"What?"
"He knew about you before I met him."
My heart started pounding.
"How?"
She said:
"He knew your name."
"He knew where we lived."
"He knew when you would deploy."
"He knew everything."
I looked at Daniel.
His expression changed.
Because we both understood.
Brad wasn't just replacing me.
He had targeted me.
Before I even knew his name.
Then Sarah said the words that changed everything.
"Michael..."
"I think Brad wanted you gone."
The room went silent.
I looked at Lily.
Then at the folder in front of me.
Someone had planned my disappearance.
Someone had tried to make my daughter believe I was dead.
Someone had tried to take my family.
And that person was still out there.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed immediately.
"What?"
He looked at me.
"Mike..."
"What happened?"
He slowly lowered the phone.
"Brad knows you're alive."
My blood froze.
"How?"
May you like
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Because someone just tried to break into your house."
