Chapter 3 - THE SECRET BEHIND MY OWN DEATH

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because I couldn't.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily outside in the mud.

I saw her tiny hands holding onto Buster.

I saw the fear in her eyes when she thought I was a ghost.

At sunrise, I was sitting at the kitchen table.

Lily was sleeping beside me.

Her head rested against my arm.

She refused to let go.

Even in her sleep.

Buster lay at her feet.

Protecting her.

Again.

Sarah had not come downstairs once.

Not once.

The woman who had spent years saying Lily was her entire world had not checked on her daughter after the worst night of her life.

That told me everything.

At 7:14 a.m., my phone rang.

It was my military friend, Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Mike."

His voice sounded serious.

"What happened?"

I looked at Lily.

"How did you know something happened?"

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

"Because someone called the base yesterday."

My body went still.

"Who?"

"Your wife."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What did she say?"

Daniel hesitated.

"She asked for information about your status."

I frowned.

"My status?"

"She wanted to know if your deployment had officially ended."

I looked toward the stairs.

"Why would she ask that?"

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Because she told someone you might never come home."

My stomach dropped.

"Who did she tell?"

Another pause.

Then:

"An insurance company."

Everything stopped.

I couldn't move.

"Insurance company?"

Daniel sighed.

"Mike..."

"How much?"

"Five hundred thousand dollars."

I looked at Lily.

At my daughter sleeping peacefully beside me.

Then I looked toward the stairs.

Toward my wife.

Five hundred thousand dollars.

That was why.

Not love.

Not loneliness.

Not fear.

Money.

"Send me everything."

"Already did."

My phone received an email.

I opened it.

The documents loaded.

Life insurance paperwork.

My name.

My signature.

My policy.

And a recent update.

Beneficiary changed.

Sarah.

I stared at the screen.

My wife had been preparing for my death.

Before I was dead.

I heard footsteps.

Sarah walked into the kitchen.

She stopped when she saw my face.

"What happened?"

I turned the phone toward her.

Her expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Michael..."

"Explain."

She looked away.

"It isn't what you think."

I laughed quietly.

"That is exactly what people say when it is exactly what I think."

She sat down.

"Brad helped me."

My eyes narrowed.

"With what?"

She didn't answer.

"Sarah."

Finally, she whispered:

"The insurance."

The room felt colder.

"You tried to collect money because you thought I was dead."

"No."

She shook her head quickly.

"I didn't know."

"Then why did you file it?"

She had no answer.

I leaned closer.

"Who convinced you I was gone?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

And for the first time...

I believed she was afraid.

"Brad."

The name came out quietly.

I froze.

"What?"

She covered her face.

"He told me he had contacts."

"He said he knew people overseas."

"He said there was an accident."

My jaw tightened.

"What else did he tell you?"

She looked at me.

"He said you weren't coming back."

"And you believed him."

She started crying.

But I couldn't feel sympathy.

Not yet.

Because while she believed I was dead...

She had allowed another man to become my daughter's father figure.

She had let him control my home.

She had let him punish my child.

I stood up.

"I need answers."

Sarah looked scared.

"Michael..."

"No."

My voice was firm.

"For eight months, I was fighting to come home."

"I was thinking about my family every single day."

"And you were planning my funeral."

She looked down.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"How long has Brad been in my house?"

Sarah said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Then Lily woke up.

Her small voice came from the table.

"Daddy?"

I turned around.

"Yes, baby?"

She looked at Sarah.

Then whispered:

"Is Brad coming back?"

I froze.

"Why would you ask that?"

Lily hugged Buster.

"Because Mommy said when you were gone..."

She stopped.

I walked closer.

"What did Mommy say?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"She said Brad was going to take care of us."

The room went silent.

I looked at Sarah.

She looked terrified.

And I realized something.

Brad wasn't just a man having an affair with my wife.

He had been planning to replace me.

And maybe...

He had planned much more than that.

My phone buzzed again.

Another unknown number.

Another message.

This time, there was no picture.

Only a sentence:

"Ask your wife what happened the night before your deployment."

I looked at Sarah.

She saw the message.

And her face lost all color.

May you like

Because whatever happened that night...

Was the secret she was most afraid I would discover.
