Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MISSION

I spent years believing my deployment was dangerous because of the enemy.

I never imagined the greatest danger came from someone who knew my schedule before I even left.

The next morning, Daniel came with new information.

"We checked your mission records."

I looked at him.

"And?"

His face was serious.

"Someone accessed your classified travel information."

I felt a cold wave move through me.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

"Someone inside?"

He nodded.

"Someone with clearance."

That meant this went deeper than Brad.

Deeper than Sarah.

Deeper than my family.

Someone had helped create the lie.

Someone had opened the door.

I looked at the documents.

"Why me?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because you were in the way."

I frowned.

"In the way of what?"

He placed another file on the table.

Inside was a company name.

A company connected to my father.

I stared at it.

"What is this?"

"Your father's business."

I shook my head.

"My father owns construction companies."

"Not just construction."

Daniel pointed.

"Defense contracts."

I felt my stomach tighten.

My father had always told me he knew nothing about military operations.

He had lied.

Again.

"How is Brad connected?"

Daniel turned the page.

"Brad worked for one of his companies."

I closed my eyes.

Everything connected.

The money.

The insurance.

The guardianship.

The fake death.

My family wasn't manipulated.

They were recruited.

I drove to my father's office that afternoon.

He looked surprised to see me.

But not scared.

That bothered me.

"You knew I would come."

He looked away.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He sighed.

"Because you're my son."

I laughed quietly.

"That didn't stop you."

He looked hurt.

"Michael..."

"No."

I placed the documents on his desk.

"Tell me the truth."

He looked at the papers.

Then sat down.

"I made mistakes."

"You destroyed my life."

"I was trying to fix things."

"By replacing me?"

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I walked around the desk.

"Who contacted Brad?"

My father looked at me.

"What?"

"Who brought him into our lives?"

Silence.

Then:

"Someone higher."

My eyes narrowed.

"Higher than you?"

He nodded.

"Who?"

Before he could answer...

The office door opened.

A man walked in.

I recognized him immediately.

Colonel Anderson.

My former superior.

The man who had shaken my hand before my final mission.

The man who told me:

"Come home safe."

He looked at me.

And I knew.

He was part of it.

"Michael."

I stared at him.

"You."

He sighed.

"I hoped you would never find out."

My father looked nervous.

"Colonel..."

I turned toward my father.

"You knew."

He looked down.

The betrayal felt endless.

Colonel Anderson closed the door.

"You need to understand."

I laughed.

"Understand what?"

"That everything was done for a reason."

I stepped forward.

"My daughter was left outside in the cold."

"Was that part of the reason?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"No."

"Then what was?"

He didn't answer.

So I asked the only question that mattered.

"Did you try to kill me?"

The room went silent.

Colonel Anderson looked away.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

"Why?"

Finally, he said:

"Because you discovered something you weren't supposed to."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He reached into his folder.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the desk.

"You found evidence of corruption inside the operation."

I looked at the paper.

Names.

Payments.

Illegal contracts.

My own father's company.

Brad's involvement.

My commander.

All connected.

I looked up.

"You framed me."

Colonel Anderson didn't deny it.

"You were becoming a problem."

The room went quiet.

Then my phone rang.

It was Lily.

I answered immediately.

Her voice was shaking.

"Daddy..."

"What happened?"

"Someone is at the house."

My heart stopped.

"What house?"

A pause.

Then:

"Grandma's house."

I looked at my father.

May you like

His face changed.

Because he knew exactly who it was.
