Chapter 2 - THE REPORT SHE NEVER EXPECTED

Margaret laughed.

It was the wrong sound.

Too quick.

Too sharp.

The laugh of someone standing on cracking ice and pretending she couldn’t hear it.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Richard didn’t blink.

“You heard me.”

“That report is fake.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Dad?”

Richard held up one hand.

“Not now.”

Margaret came down the steps and snatched at the papers.

I caught her wrist.

“Don’t.”

Her eyes burned into mine.

“You planned this.”

I almost laughed.

“You chained my daughter to a porch.”

“I did no such thing.”

Lily spoke from behind me.

“Yes, you did.”

The tiny voice silenced everyone.

Margaret looked at her.

Lily shrank against my side, but she didn’t look away.

“You told Mr. Colin to lock it.”

Margaret’s mouth tightened.

Colin.

The estate manager.

I looked toward the back doors.

A tall man in a gray suit immediately lowered his eyes.

Richard noticed.

“Colin?”

The man swallowed.

“Sir, Mrs. Whitmore said the child wasn’t allowed in the house.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Colin’s face drained.

“I was told to secure her outside until Ms. Parker arrived.”

My blood went hot.

“Secure her?”

Daniel finally looked at Lily’s ankle.

A faint red mark circled the skin.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

Margaret turned on him.

“Don’t you dare.”

Daniel froze.

That told me everything about their relationship.

Forty-one years old.

Successful.

Educated.

Still terrified of his mother.

That fear had destroyed our marriage.

And now it had reached our daughter.

Richard raised the report.

“Where did you get this?”

I looked at him.

“Three weeks ago, I received an anonymous email containing a lab number.”

Margaret’s eyes flickered.

“I called the lab. Someone had ordered a paternity test using Daniel’s stored medical sample and Lily’s DNA.”

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

I believed him.

That surprised me.

I continued.

“The first report claimed Lily wasn’t Daniel’s.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

There.

She knew that part.

“So I ordered a second test.”

Her smile vanished.

“This time, we used a court-accredited laboratory and witnessed samples.”

Daniel looked at the pages.

“And?”

I pointed at the report in Richard’s hand.

“Probability of paternity: 99.9998 percent.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

For years Margaret had hinted Lily wasn’t his.

After our divorce, those hints became accusations.

Daniel never fully believed them.

But he never fully defended Lily either.

That was almost worse.

Richard’s voice was low.

“And the rest?”

I took a breath.

“When the genetic counselor compared Daniel’s sample to family medical records, she found an inconsistency.”

Margaret stepped backward.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“What inconsistency?”

I didn’t enjoy saying it.

But I said it anyway.

“The blood-group records from Daniel’s birth made his paternity impossible.”

Daniel stared at his father.

Then at Margaret.

“You told me Dad was my biological father.”

“He is your father.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Richard walked toward her.

Forty-three years of marriage stood between them.

“Margaret.”

His voice shook.

“Who is Daniel’s biological father?”

She lifted her chin.

“You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You humiliated a seven-year-old over blood while hiding this?”

“This proves nothing.”

“It proves you lied.”

She stepped closer to him.

“I protected this family.”

Richard looked at Lily.

The dirt on her dress.

The mark on her ankle.

Then he looked back at his wife.

“From her?”

Margaret’s silence answered.

I thought that was the worst of it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” I asked.

He answered.

Listened for ten seconds.

Then stared directly at Margaret.

“That was my attorney.”

Margaret went still.

Daniel lowered the phone.

“He says someone filed emergency papers this morning to remove Lily from the Whitmore family trust.”

Richard slowly turned toward his wife.

Margaret said nothing.

May you like

Daniel’s voice cracked with fury.

“And the filing included the fake DNA report.”
