Chapter 13 - THE LAST THING MARGARET TRIED TO TAKE

Police put an officer outside my house.
Daniel refused to leave.
Neither did Richard.
At midnight, Detective Harris called.
Victor Dane had been located.
He wasn’t a hitman.
He was worse in a quieter way.
A fixer.
He manufactured scandals.
Photographs.
Witnesses.
Stories.
Anything rich people could use in court.
Margaret had paid him to build a case that I was an unstable mother.
The party was supposed to trigger the final piece.
Me losing control.
Me striking Margaret.
My stomach dropped.
“I slapped her.”
Harris nodded.
“That’s exactly what she wanted.”
Daniel swore.
The chain.
The insult.
The crowd.
Margaret had designed the scene knowing I would react.
Then she could present the fake DNA report and footage of me hitting her as proof that Lily was living with an unstable woman.
“She wanted custody?” I asked.
Richard answered.
“Not custody.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The trust.”
He explained.
If Margaret could establish Lily as Daniel’s child but remove me as guardian, she could push for a Whitmore-appointed financial guardian over Lily’s future trust interest.
Someone she controlled.
Daniel looked sick.
“So even after proving Lily was mine…”
“She still had a second plan,” I said.
That was why both DNA narratives existed.
First: Lily isn’t family.
If that failed—
Second: Lily is family, but Emma is dangerous.
Margaret had built both exits before the party started.
Harris told us Dane had cooperated.
He provided audio files.
One recording captured Margaret giving instructions.
Her voice filled my living room.
“Make sure the child is upset before Emma arrives.”
My fingernails dug into my palm.
Dane asked, “How upset?”
Margaret replied,
“Enough that Emma stops thinking.”
Lily was asleep upstairs.
Thank God.
The recording continued.
“And if she doesn’t hit you?”
Margaret laughed.
“She will.”
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Daniel turned it off.
For a long moment no one spoke.
Then Richard said, “I’m filing for divorce.”
Daniel stared at him.
Richard’s voice hardened.
“And tomorrow I’m asking the board to freeze every account Margaret can access.”
Claire nodded.
“Good.”
“But that isn’t enough.”
He looked at me.
“What do you want?”
I thought about it.
Not revenge.
Not anymore.
I wanted Lily safe.
“I want every lie exposed.”
Daniel nodded.
“So do I.”
The next morning, Margaret appeared in court for an emergency hearing related to the trust filing.
She entered wearing navy blue.
Pearls again.
Of course.
She still believed clothing could restore authority.
Her attorney attacked the DNA procedure.
Then my parenting.
Then the slap.
Our attorney played Margaret’s recording.
The courtroom changed.
Margaret’s face did too.
Then Detective Harris provided the lab supervisor’s sworn statement.
The fake report collapsed.
Finally, Richard’s attorney submitted Samuel’s original will and forensic records showing Margaret’s secret payments.
The judge stared at Margaret for a long time.
Then denied her trust petition entirely.
Margaret stood.
“This is my family.”
Richard answered from behind her.
“No.”
She turned.
He removed his wedding ring.
“This was your audience.”
He set the ring on the table.
“And the show is over.”
Margaret stared at him.
Then at Daniel.
“Danny.”
He didn’t move.
“Please.”
For one second, I saw the mother beneath the monster.
Then Daniel asked the only question that mattered.
“Why Lily?”
Margaret’s face hardened again.
“Because she made you weak.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at our daughter’s photograph on his phone.
“She made me finally see you.”
Court officers approached Margaret.
She turned to me.
“You think this ends with me?”
I said nothing.
She smiled.
“You still haven’t asked who gave me Lily’s first DNA sample.”
My heart stopped.
“That was Colin.”
Margaret smiled wider.
“No.”
May you like
She looked at Daniel.
“You did.”
