Chapter 11 - THREE MINUTES IN THE DARK

Everything happened fast.
Too fast to be brave.
Daniel moved between Colin and the stairs.
“Emma, get Lily.”
I ran.
Colin shouted, “Nobody moves!”
I didn’t stop.
A chair crashed behind me.
Claire screamed.
Daniel grunted.
I reached Lily’s room.
She was sitting upright in bed.
“Mommy?”
“Shoes. Now.”
“What’s happening?”
“We’re leaving through the bathroom window.”
Her eyes widened.
I wanted to tell her it was a game.
Children know when adults lie.
So I didn’t.
“There’s a dangerous man downstairs.”
Her face turned white.
“But I’m right here.”
She nodded.
No crying.
No panic.
Just trust.
That made me move faster.
The bathroom roof was low.
I climbed out first.
Then lifted Lily through.
A crash came from downstairs.
“Go!”
We crossed the roof toward the trellis.
Lily whispered, “I’m scared.”
“So am I.”
That surprised her.
“Grown-ups get scared?”
“All the time.”
“Then how do you know what to do?”
“We do the next thing.”
I lowered her down.
“The next thing is climb.”
She climbed.
We reached the yard.
Police sirens approached.
Then the back door burst open.
Colin came running out.
Alone.
He saw us.
Changed direction.
“No!”
I shoved Lily behind the tool shed.
Colin grabbed my coat.
I twisted away.
He caught my hair.
Pain exploded across my scalp.
Then someone hit him from behind.
Daniel.
They crashed into the grass.
The knife flew.
Claire ran from the house.
“Emma!”
“Get Lily!”
Colin punched Daniel.
Daniel fell.
Colin lunged for the knife.
A voice shouted from the fence.
“DON’T!”
Marcus.
He had arrived with Detective Harris.
Colin froze.
Police surrounded him.
This time he didn’t escape.
Daniel lay on the grass bleeding from his lip.
Lily ran to him.
“Daddy!”
He wrapped both arms around her.
“I’m okay.”
She started crying.
Not because he was hurt.
Because he wasn’t gone.
I sat beside them.
For the first time since our divorce, the three of us held each other without anger between us.
Then Claire emerged carrying something.
Not the tape.
A small black ledger Colin had dropped.
Detective Harris opened it.
Inside were payments.
Dates.
Initials.
Margaret’s.
Colin’s.
A lab technician.
A trust administrator.
The fake DNA report was only one piece.
Margaret had spent years paying people to manipulate documents around Richard’s estate.
Harris turned another page.
Then stopped.
“What?” I asked.
He looked at Daniel.
“There’s an entry from seven years ago.”
The year Lily was born.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Harris read the note.
HOSPITAL — PARKER INFANT — SAMPLE SWITCH COMPLETE.
My mouth went dry.
“What sample?”
Claire looked at me.
“Emma…”
I shook my head.
“No.”
May you like
Daniel stood slowly.
“What did my mother do when Lily was born?”
