Chapter 12 - WHAT HAPPENED THE DAY LILY WAS BORN

I remembered Lily’s birth clearly.

Twenty-one hours of labor.

Daniel crying harder than I did.

Richard arriving with flowers.

Margaret arriving with complaints.

The room was too small.

The hospital wasn’t prestigious enough.

Lily’s name sounded childish.

She stayed fourteen minutes.

Or so I thought.

Detective Harris contacted the hospital.

By morning, we knew more.

A newborn blood sample had been collected from Lily for routine screening.

Someone accessed the storage record two days later using credentials belonging to a lab supervisor.

That supervisor was now retired.

And listed in Colin’s ledger.

Daniel looked at me.

“My mother started questioning Lily’s paternity when she was a baby.”

I nodded slowly.

“She told me Lily’s blood type didn’t make sense.”

“Because she switched the sample.”

The idea was monstrous in its simplicity.

Create doubt.

Plant a biological inconsistency.

Wait.

Then use that doubt whenever necessary.

Margaret hadn’t decided seven years ago to remove Lily from the trust.

She had simply created a weapon in case she ever needed it.

That was Margaret’s talent.

She planted land mines years before anyone walked across them.

The retired lab supervisor agreed to speak with police.

By afternoon, he admitted Margaret paid him to replace Lily’s stored sample with another child’s.

He claimed he thought it involved a private family dispute.

I wanted to reach through the phone.

“A family dispute?”

Daniel took the phone away before I said something useless.

The confession gave investigators enough for more charges.

Forgery.

Evidence tampering.

Fraud.

And combined with Lily’s restraint at the party, Margaret’s position became much worse.

Richard came to my house that evening.

He looked smaller.

“Emma.”

I opened the door.

He held a box.

“What is that?”

“Everything I should have given you years ago.”

Inside were photographs.

Lily as a baby.

Birthday cards.

Letters.

All things I had mailed to the Whitmore house for Daniel after the divorce.

I stared at them.

“They were never returned.”

“No.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Margaret intercepted them.”

Daniel picked up a Father’s Day card.

Lily had been four.

Inside, in purple crayon:

I LOVE YOU DADDY EVEN WHEN YOU ARE BUSY.

Daniel sat down.

He covered his face.

Margaret hadn’t only poisoned people against one another with lies.

She controlled what reached them.

What didn’t.

Who called.

Who visited.

Who felt rejected.

Years of pain had been curated.

Daniel whispered, “I thought you stopped letting her contact me.”

“I thought you stopped answering.”

Richard sat across from us.

“She did this to me too.”

He pulled out another envelope.

Letters Samuel had sent him before his death.

Never delivered.

One was dated the week before the boating accident.

Richard opened it.

Samuel had asked to meet privately.

He wrote:

There is something about Daniel you deserve to hear from me, not Margaret.

Richard’s eyes filled.

“We could have ended this forty years ago.”

Claire, sitting near the window, shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

She held another document.

“Maybe not.”

It was a recent forensic accounting report.

She had commissioned it before contacting me.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars had moved through Margaret’s shell companies.

One payment happened three months ago.

To a private investigator.

Another happened last week.

To someone named Victor Dane.

Daniel frowned.

“Who’s Victor Dane?”

Richard went pale.

“I know him.”

“Who is he?”

Richard looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“He handles problems people don’t want connected to their names.”

My blood turned cold.

Claire checked the report.

“The final payment was yesterday morning.”

The day of the party.

Daniel stood.

“What was he paid to do?”

Richard reached for his phone.

Before he could dial, Lily entered the room holding my tablet.

“Mommy?”

She turned the screen toward me.

A message had appeared.

May you like

One sentence.

MARGARET WANTS HER GRANDDAUGHTER BACK.
