Chapter 7 - The Story They Sold

By noon, reporters were outside Cole Development.

By three, Claire’s phone was exploding.

The story spread quickly.

But not the real story.

Someone leaked a different version.

FORMER EMPLOYEE ATTEMPTS HOSTILE TAKEOVER AFTER PERSONAL DISPUTE.

Another headline appeared.

DISGRUNTLED HEIRESS TARGETS FAMILY BUSINESS.

Claire stared at her phone.

Daniel took it from her.

“Stop reading.”

“They’re destroying me again.”

“They’re trying.”

“It worked before.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Because you were alone before.”

Claire looked at him.

“And now?”

“You’re not.”

That sentence stayed with her.

Later that evening, something unexpected happened.

A video appeared online.

It had been filmed inside the restaurant.

Vanessa throwing the water.

Claire standing silently.

The napkin hitting the floor.

Then Daniel standing up.

The video spread quickly.

But the part that mattered wasn’t Daniel.

It was Claire.

People saw what had actually happened.

They saw Vanessa’s smile.

They saw Claire refuse to retaliate.

And they saw dozens of diners sitting silently.

Comments flooded in.

Why did nobody help her?

That woman thought humiliation made her powerful.

Who is the guy who stood up?

Claire watched once.

Then turned it off.

Daniel was standing behind her.

“Does it bother you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone is suddenly defending me now that it’s safe.”

Daniel didn’t argue.

Claire looked at him.

“You stood up before you knew anyone was filming.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

Claire noticed.

“What?”

“Your father once did the same for me.”

Claire frowned.

Daniel sat down.

“Twenty-two years ago, I was a junior analyst.”

“I found irregularities in an investment fund.”

“When I reported them, everyone decided I was the problem.”

“Everyone except Thomas.”

Claire listened.

“He put his career at risk to defend me.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I never forgot it.”

Claire’s eyes softened.

“So the restaurant…”

“I recognized you the second you walked in.”

“You were already looking for me.”

“Yes.”

“Would you have stood up if you hadn’t known who I was?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

May you like

There was no hesitation.

And Claire believed him.
