Chapter 13 - Vanessa Returns

Three months later, Claire was leaving the office when she saw Vanessa waiting outside.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Vanessa looked healthier.

Quieter.

“I heard the repayment program started.”

Claire nodded.

“Last week.”

“My father would hate that.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Then we’re probably doing something right.”

Vanessa looked embarrassed.

“I wanted to tell you something.”

Claire waited.

“I watched the restaurant video again.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Vanessa continued.

“I kept thinking about that glass.”

“I thought throwing it made me look strong.”

“But watching it afterward…”

She shook her head.

“I looked small.”

Claire said nothing.

Vanessa met her eyes.

“You never humiliated me back.”

“I wanted to.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Claire thought for a moment.

“Because becoming you wouldn’t have healed me.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

This time, Claire believed her.

That didn’t mean everything was forgiven.

But forgiveness and trust were different things.

Claire finally said, “I hope you build something better from what’s left.”

May you like

Vanessa nodded.

Then she walked away.
