Chapter 1 - The Glass of Water

The glass left Vanessa Cole’s hand before anyone realized what she was about to do.
Cold water struck Claire Bennett directly in the face.
A few drops hit the white tablecloth.
The rest soaked Claire’s cream blouse and ran through her brown hair.
The entire restaurant went silent.
Forks stopped halfway to mouths.
Conversations died.
A waiter carrying two plates froze beside the bar.
Vanessa slowly lowered the empty glass.
Then she smiled.
“Maybe now you’ll learn some respect.”
Claire didn’t answer.
She stood beside the table, water dripping from her chin, while nearly fifty strangers watched.
Some looked embarrassed for her.
Others looked curious.
A few already seemed to have decided she must have done something to deserve it.
Claire knew that look.
She had seen it too many times over the past year.
Judgment required no evidence.
Only a convincing accusation.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You should leave.”
Claire swallowed.
“I came here because you asked me to.”
“I asked you here so we could settle this privately.”
Claire looked around the crowded restaurant.
“Does this feel private to you?”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“You know exactly what you did.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice was quiet.
“I know what you told everyone I did.”
A murmur passed through the nearby tables.
Vanessa noticed it.
Her expression hardened.
“Careful.”
Claire reached for a napkin.
Her fingers were trembling.
Before she could take it, Vanessa grabbed the napkin first and dropped it onto the floor.
“Pick it up.”
Claire stared at her.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You heard me.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then a chair scraped slowly across the wooden floor.
The sound seemed unnaturally loud.
Claire turned.
A man sitting alone three tables away had stood up.
He was tall.
Dark hair.
Charcoal suit.
White shirt.
No tie.
Claire had noticed him when she entered the restaurant, but only because he seemed completely uninterested in everyone around him.
Now his eyes were fixed on Vanessa.
“That’s enough.”
His voice wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
The man walked over.
He didn’t threaten Vanessa.
He didn’t raise his voice.
He simply picked up a clean napkin from another table and handed it to Claire.
Claire stared at him.
There was something strangely familiar about his face.
But she couldn’t place it.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Are you trying to be some kind of hero?”
“No.”
The man looked at Claire’s soaked blouse.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“I just know what bullying looks like.”
Vanessa’s cheeks reddened.
“You have no idea who she is.”
The stranger’s expression barely changed.
“I know exactly who she is.”
Claire froze.
Vanessa did too.
The stranger reached inside his jacket.
He removed a black leather wallet.
For one terrifying second, Claire wondered whether he was law enforcement.
Instead, he opened it and removed a business card.
He placed it on the table.
Vanessa looked down.
Her face changed immediately.
Claire followed her gaze.
The name on the card meant nothing to most of the restaurant.
But it meant everything to Vanessa.
DANIEL MERCER.
MERCER CAPITAL GROUP.
CHAIRMAN.
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“You’re Daniel Mercer?”
“Yes.”
The arrogance disappeared from her face.
Mercer Capital wasn’t simply another investment company.
It controlled the fund currently deciding whether Vanessa’s family business survived the year.
Claire knew because she had once helped prepare the financial documents herself.
Vanessa glanced around the restaurant.
Suddenly she realized everyone was still watching.
Daniel turned to Claire.
“Did she ask you here to threaten you?”
Claire hesitated.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She’s lying.”
Daniel didn’t look at Vanessa.
He kept his eyes on Claire.
“Claire?”
Hearing her name from a stranger unsettled her even more.
“How do you know my name?”
Daniel was silent for a moment.
Then he reached into his jacket again.
This time he removed an envelope.
He placed it gently on the table.
“I’ve been looking for you for three weeks.”
Claire stared at him.
Vanessa went pale.
May you like
And before Claire could ask why, Daniel said the six words that changed everything.
“Your father sent me before he died.”
