Chapter 3 - Box 317

The bank opened at nine the next morning.
Claire and Daniel were waiting outside at 8:47.
Neither had slept much.
Daniel had arranged for an attorney named Rachel Kim to meet them there.
Rachel carried two phones, a leather briefcase, and the expression of someone who trusted absolutely nobody.
“You have identification?”
Claire nodded.
“The key?”
“Gone.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“That complicates things.”
“But doesn’t stop us,” Daniel said.
Inside, Claire provided identification and signed several forms.
The bank manager disappeared for almost twenty minutes.
When he returned, he looked uncomfortable.
“There’s a problem.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What problem?”
“Someone attempted to access Box 317 yesterday.”
Daniel immediately stood.
“Who?”
The manager hesitated.
Rachel placed her business card on the desk.
“Choose your next sentence carefully.”
The manager swallowed.
“A woman presented a key.”
Claire knew before he said the name.
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
The manager looked at the screen.
“Eleanor Cole.”
Vanessa’s mother.
Claire felt sick.
Eleanor had hugged her at Thomas’s funeral.
She had cried against Claire’s shoulder.
She had told Claire she would always have a family with the Coles.
“Did she open it?”
“No.”
“She didn’t have authorization.”
Daniel nodded.
“So she has the stolen key.”
The manager looked alarmed.
Rachel immediately said, “We’re going to need the security footage preserved.”
Twenty minutes later, the box was brought into a private room.
The bank drilled the lock.
Claire opened it.
Inside were three things.
A flash drive.
A handwritten ledger.
And a photograph.
Claire picked up the photograph first.
Her father stood beside Richard Cole.
The photograph appeared to be at least fifteen years old.
On the back, Thomas had written:
THE DAY I MADE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“What mistake?”
Daniel pointed toward the ledger.
“Maybe that tells us.”
It did.
Pages of payments.
Shell companies.
Fake contractors.
Properties purchased through subsidiaries.
Millions moving between accounts.
Rachel flipped through the pages.
“This isn’t sloppy accounting.”
“What is it?”
“Fraud.”
Claire stared at her.
“How much?”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Then back at Claire.
“Potentially tens of millions.”
Daniel inserted the flash drive into an offline laptop.
There were twelve folders.
The last folder was labeled:
IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.
Claire’s hands went cold.
Daniel opened it.
A video appeared.
Thomas Bennett sat behind his desk.
Claire covered her mouth.
Her father looked tired.
Older than she remembered.
He stared directly into the camera.
“My name is Thomas Bennett.”
Claire stopped breathing.
“If you are watching this, I may no longer be alive.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
She nodded for him to continue.
Thomas took a breath on screen.
“For nineteen years, I helped Richard Cole build Cole Development.”
Claire knew that.
What she didn’t know came next.
“I also helped him hide what we did.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
Her father continued.
“I told myself we were protecting the company.”
“I told myself nobody was being hurt.”
“I was wrong.”
Thomas looked down.
“When I tried to leave, Richard reminded me that my signatures were on everything.”
Claire whispered, “Dad…”
Then Thomas looked directly into the camera again.
“But the financial crimes are not why I’m afraid.”
Daniel leaned closer.
Thomas’s next words changed the room.
“Three weeks ago, Richard discovered I had copied the records.”
“He told me accidents happen to men who betray their partners.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
The video continued.
“If my death is called natural, do not accept that conclusion without asking questions.”
Nobody spoke.
Then a sound came from outside the private room.
A door slammed.
Daniel stood.
Rachel closed the laptop.
May you like
Footsteps approached.
And someone tried the handle.
