Chapter 5 — Evelyn’s Last Attempt
Evelyn refused to surrender.
She came to my office with one final offer.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
She sat across from me.
“You’re destroying a family.”
I smiled.
“No, Evelyn.”
I placed a folder on the table.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
She opened it.
Inside were documents showing every person she had manipulated.
Every employee she had threatened.
Every secret payment she had made.
Her expression changed.
“How long?”
“How long have I known?”
She nodded.
I looked out the window.
“Since the first year of my marriage.”
Her eyes widened.
“You stayed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I turned back.
“Because I wanted the truth.”
A pause.

“And now everyone knows it.”
For the first time, Evelyn Holloway had nothing to say.
