Chapter 3 — The Recording They Never Knew Existed

Grant’s anger returned.
“You planned this.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
His eyes widened.
“You admit it?”
“Yes.”
I stood slowly.
“Because planning is what intelligent people do when they know they are surrounded by enemies.”
The insult hit harder than a scream.
Grant stepped closer.
“You think you’re smarter than me?”
“No.”
I looked around the room.
“I know.”
Before he could answer, the lights above us flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then the large television screen mounted above the fireplace turned on.
Evelyn frowned.
“What is this?”
The screen showed the dining room.
The same room.
The same table.
But from another angle.
The security camera.
A recording.
The entire family stared.
Then the audio began.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“Look at her. Even now, she still won’t fight back.”
Vanessa’s laughter followed.
Grant’s voice.
“Get out.”
Then—
The sound of the soup hitting my head.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Because watching cruelty was different from remembering it.
The video continued.
Every insult.
Every humiliation.
Every conversation they thought nobody heard.
Then came the moment that destroyed Grant.
His own voice.
“If she doesn’t cooperate, I’ll make sure she leaves with nothing.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Because she remembered.
But she didn’t remember there was proof.
Grant stared at the screen.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
The recording stopped.
And another file appeared.
A legal notice.
“Everything has been submitted.”
Grant looked at me.
“You wouldn’t.”
May you like
I smiled.
“I already did.”
