Chapter 13 - THE FINAL SECRET OF SARAH CARTER

The sound of the locked doors echoed through the abandoned factory.

A heavy metal click.

Then another.

Then another.

Ethan had planned everything.

The location.

The timing.

The people involved.

Even the moment when the truth would finally break us.

Adrian stepped closer to me.

“Stay behind me.”

But this time, I wasn’t the same woman who had stood silently in that ballroom.

I wasn’t the maid everyone thought they could control.

I had spent my entire life believing my mother left me with unanswered questions.

Now I knew the truth.

She had been protecting me.

And I refused to let someone else use her memory for revenge.

“Ethan.”

He looked at me.

“You knew my mother.”

His expression softened slightly.

“Yes.”

“Then you knew what kind of person she was.”

He didn’t answer.

I continued.

“She would never want you hurting innocent people.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what she suffered.”

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“But I know what she taught me.”

The factory became silent.

“She taught me that pain doesn’t give you permission to become cruel.”

For a second, Ethan looked like the young man my mother once trusted.

Then the anger returned.

“You sound just like her.”

“Maybe because she was right.”

Those words hit him.

Adrian noticed.

Because for the first time, Ethan looked uncertain.

Then Beatrice stepped forward.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

“Don’t.”

Her voice was different.

Not powerful.

Not arrogant.

Desperate.

“You have already taken too much.”

Ethan laughed.

“Look who’s talking.”

Beatrice lowered her eyes.

“I made mistakes.”

“You destroyed her life.”

“Yes.”

The answer shocked everyone.

Beatrice looked at me.

“I did.”

Her voice broke.

“I hated Sarah because she knew the truth. I hated that she was brave enough to stand against Richard.”

She looked at Adrian.

“And I hated that my entire life was built on someone else’s lie.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew my father wasn’t your real father.”

Beatrice nodded.

“I found out when I was nineteen.”

Silence.

“And I spent the next twenty years trying to become someone Richard Vale would finally respect.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But he never did.”

For the first time, I saw the wound behind her cruelty.

She wasn’t born heartless.

She became someone who believed power was the only way to survive.

Then Ethan interrupted.

“Enough.”

He pulled a small device from his pocket.

A recording device.

Adrian immediately became alert.

“What is that?”

Ethan smiled.

“Everything.”

He pressed a button.

A voice filled the factory.

Richard Vale.

Adrian froze.

His father’s voice.

The man who had been dead for eight years.

“You think morality matters in business?”

A younger Richard laughed.

“It doesn’t.”

My hands shook.

The recording continued.

Sarah’s voice appeared.

“You ruined people’s lives.”

Richard answered.

“I built an empire.”

“You destroyed families.”

“I created something bigger than any of them.”

Then Richard said something that made Adrian go completely still.

“Even my own son will never know the truth.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian looked devastated.

“My father knew.”

Daniel, who had secretly followed us and entered with security moments earlier, whispered:

“He knew everything.”

Ethan looked at Adrian.

“Your father erased my family.”

Then he looked at me.

“He erased yours too.”

I looked at the necklace around my neck.

The evidence.

The truth my mother protected.

“Open it.”

Everyone looked at me.

Ethan smiled.

“You finally understand.”

I removed the necklace.

My hands trembled as I opened the small silver pendant.

Inside was a tiny memory chip.

A piece of my mother’s final message.

Daniel quickly connected it to a laptop.

A video appeared.

My mother.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My breath caught.

“Emma…”

Her voice.

After all these years.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“I wanted to tell you everything.”

She paused.

“But I was afraid.”

The video continued.

“Richard Vale hurt many people. But the person who helped him hide everything was not who anyone expected.”

Everyone looked at Beatrice.

But my mother shook her head.

“No.”

The video showed a document.

A name.

A name nobody expected.

My mother whispered:

“The person who destroyed our family was someone closer than we knew.”

The screen froze.

And the name appeared.

Adrian’s face changed.

May you like

Because the person listed on the document…

Was someone still alive.
