Chapter 1 - THE SCISSORS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The first thing I heard was the sound of my own hair falling onto a silver tray.

Not screaming.

Not music stopping.

Not the shocked whispers of hundreds of wealthy strangers.

Just one sharp cut.

Snip.

And then silence.

For a moment, I stood completely frozen.

I was holding a tray filled with champagne glasses in the middle of the Vale Foundation’s annual charity gala. The ballroom around me was glowing with crystal chandeliers, expensive jewelry, and designer gowns that probably cost more than my entire yearly salary.

Everyone in that room had money.

Power.

A last name that opened doors.

And I was the woman standing in the center of it all wearing a simple black maid uniform with a piece of my hair lying in front of me.

My fingers tightened around the tray.

Then I felt the weight of my hair.

Uneven.

Destroyed.

My breathing stopped.

The tray slipped from my hands.

Crash.

The sound of crystal breaking echoed across the marble floor.

Hundreds of conversations disappeared instantly.

Every person turned toward me.

I lowered my eyes and saw broken glasses scattered around my feet.

But I barely noticed them.

Because behind me stood Beatrice Vale.

The woman holding the silver scissors.

The woman who had just cut my hair in front of the entire city.

She looked completely calm.

Almost satisfied.

“There,” she said, slowly placing the scissors back into her hand. “Much better.”

My lips parted.

I couldn’t believe what had just happened.

“Mrs. Vale…”

My voice shook.

She tilted her head.

“What?”

I touched the damaged section of my hair.

“You cut my hair.”

A few guests nearby looked uncomfortable.

But nobody stepped forward.

Beatrice gave a small smile.

“Yes, I did.”

Her eyes traveled over my uniform.

“You were becoming too noticeable.”

I stared at her.

“Noticeable?”

She stepped closer.

“You seem to have forgotten something.”

Her voice became colder.

“You are a servant.”

The word hit harder than the scissors.

A servant.

That was all she saw when she looked at me.

Not a person.

Not a woman.

Not the mother of her grandchild.

Just someone who cleaned her house.

Someone who prepared her meals.

Someone she believed could be removed whenever she became inconvenient.

I swallowed the anger burning in my chest.

“I’m pregnant.”

The room went even quieter.

For a second, I thought maybe those words would make her stop.

Maybe she would finally understand.

But Beatrice only looked down at my stomach.

Then back at my face.

“You should be more careful with your words.”

I felt my heart sink.

“You know exactly what I mean.”

Her expression hardened.

“You are a maid who forgot her place.”

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to tell her everything she had done.

The insults.

The threats.

The way she had spent weeks trying to convince the staff that I was a mistake.

But my voice disappeared.

Because I saw the cameras.

The reporters.

The guests watching.

This was not an accident.

She wanted this.

She wanted witnesses.

For weeks, Beatrice Vale had tried to erase me quietly.

Tonight, she wanted the world to watch.

She wanted everyone to believe I was nothing.

Then a voice came from behind her.

“What did you do?”

The entire ballroom changed.

I didn’t even need to turn around.

I knew that voice.

Adrian.

My Adrian.

The man I loved.

The father of my unborn child.

Slow footsteps crossed the marble floor.

Beatrice immediately turned.

“Adrian.”

But his attention wasn’t on her.

His eyes were on me.

The damaged hair.

The broken glasses.

My hand covering my stomach.

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Something much deeper.

Disappointment.

“What happened?” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the truth.

His mother had humiliated me.

And everyone had watched.

Beatrice lifted her chin.

“I corrected a problem.”

Adrian looked at her.

“A problem?”

“She was embarrassing this family.”

I saw his jaw tighten.

“She is carrying my child.”

The words came from my mouth before I could stop them.

The entire ballroom froze.

A woman near the front covered her mouth.

Someone whispered.

“His child?”

Beatrice’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Adrian turned slowly toward his mother.

“Did you know?”

Beatrice said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

His eyes darkened.

“You knew?”

“She was planning to use you,” Beatrice said quickly. “I was protecting you.”

I stared at her.

“Protecting him?”

My voice cracked.

“You attacked me.”

“I corrected your appearance.”

“You cut my hair in front of everyone.”

“You were making a scene.”

I almost laughed.

The woman who created the humiliation was accusing me of causing it.

Adrian stepped between us.

“Enough.”

One word.

But the entire room listened.

He looked toward the staff near the entrance.

Then toward his legal team.

“Freeze everything.”

Beatrice blinked.

“What?”

Adrian didn’t look away.

“All financial approvals connected to my mother.”

The room became tense.

“Adrian, don’t do this.”

He finally looked at her.

“You touched my pregnant wife in front of hundreds of witnesses.”

His voice became colder.

“And now you’re going to explain why.”

Beatrice’s face went pale.

Because she knew something.

Something Adrian didn’t know yet.

And whatever it was…

May you like

It was the reason she had been trying so desperately to get rid of me.

The reason she wanted my baby gone.
