Chapter 9 - A PLACE TO TELL THE TRUTH

They spent the night in a small hotel near the clinic. Declan paid in cash, then used the lobby phone to call a lawyer he had trusted before Sean joined the business.

Nora Bell arrived at dawn carrying a canvas bag and looking at Declan as if she already regretted coming.

“You told me to bring a copy of the port records,” she said. “Why is your wife standing beside you?”

“Because she can,” Camille answered.

Nora put down the bag. Declan told her what had happened, including the gunfire. He expected questions about Sean. Instead, she asked for Tessa’s recorder.

Tessa played the file. Through the hiss of a vacuum cleaner, they heard Aris and Sean discussing Camille’s transfer. Sean said the woman in the bed had become “too interested in the books.”

Nora replayed it. “That supports her account. It won’t explain the bomb by itself.”

“There’s a garage record,” Camille said.

Nora searched the bag. “I brought everything from the old repair order.” She found a thin folder with a photograph stapled to the front. “This came from the garage camera.”

In the picture, Sean stood beside Declan’s sedan. The second man was partly hidden by the raised hood, but his profile was visible.

Declan knew him. Luca Moretti.

For two years, Sean had stood beside Declan while he hunted Luca’s crew. Sean had pointed out warehouses, accounts, and people to question. Several of those men were dead.

“Why keep the picture?” Declan asked.

“Sean told me it showed a business meeting,” Nora said. “I kept it because I didn’t believe him.”

Declan slid the photograph back into its folder. “We take it to the police.”

Nora nodded. “I’ll call a detective I know. You three stay here.”

She stepped into the hall to make the call. A minute later, Declan’s phone lit up. A message from Sean showed a photo of Nora standing beside her car outside the hotel.
