Chapter 12 - TESSA’S MOTHER

Tessa listened to the care facility’s voicemail three times. Her mother had not been well enough to walk unassisted in months.

Declan asked Ruiz to send someone to the dock. Then he looked at Tessa. “I’m sorry Sean found out where she was.”

“You ran a background check when you hired me,” she said.

“I did.”

“Aris had access to the staff files.”

Declan had given him that access.

At the dock, police found the charter boat tied to a fuel station. Aris was aboard with two hired guards. Tessa’s mother, Ruth, sat in the cabin, frightened but unharmed.

Tessa insisted on speaking to her by phone before she believed it.

“Mom?”

“I’m all right, honey. They said you’d been hurt.”

“I’m here.” Tessa covered her mouth. “I’m coming to get you.”

Aris claimed Sean had ordered the move and that he believed Ruth needed protection. Ruiz had him brought in for questioning. With his guards gone and Sean missing, his explanation began to change.

He admitted Camille had recovered enough to communicate months before Declan was told. Sean had paid him to keep her isolated. Aris said he had never seen anyone put a bomb in the car.

“Ask him about the forged consent forms,” Camille told Ruiz.

“And the drugs,” Declan said. He remembered nights when Camille had seemed less responsive than the night before.

Ruiz went back into the interview room.

Later, Tessa and Ruth were reunited in a quiet office. Declan stayed in the hallway. He could hear Ruth scolding her daughter for taking risks, then crying as she held her.

Camille stood beside him.

“I’ve apologized to Tessa,” she said. “I owe you one too.”

“You do.”

“I thought Sean’s papers were real. After I learned they weren’t, I still waited.”

Declan faced her. “I need time with that.”

“I know.”

Ruiz appeared at the end of the hall. Aris had given her a location: Sean was meeting Luca Moretti at the container terminal before morning.

“He says Sean has the original order for the bomb,” Ruiz said.

Declan looked at the clock. Morning was less than an hour away.
