Chapter 7 - OUT THROUGH THE RAIN

Declan fired at the ceiling fixture. Glass burst, and the garage went dark except for the SUV’s headlights. He pulled Tessa behind a concrete pillar. Camille dropped to the floor.

Someone outside shouted. Gunfire struck the wall near Declan’s head.

Aris ran for the service stairs. Sean grabbed his collar and dragged him behind a car.

Declan had three rounds left in his magazine. He used one to put out a headlight, then moved while the men outside adjusted to the darkness.

“Tessa,” he whispered, “can you drive?”

“Yes.”

“Take the gray car. Keys are inside. Get Camille out.”

Camille crawled toward him. “I’m not leaving you.”

“You know something Sean needs. Stay alive long enough to tell it.”

Tessa pulled Camille across the garage. They reached the gray sedan as a man came through the open door. Declan fired. The man ducked. Tessa started the engine and drove straight at him.

He jumped aside. The car tore through the rain.

Declan ran for the narrow maintenance exit behind the cars. Sean called after him.

“You think I wanted her hurt?”

Declan stopped just long enough to answer. “You knew there was a bomb.”

“It wasn’t supposed to go off with her inside.”

The words landed harder than the gunfire. Sean had finally said what Declan had come home needing to hear.

Declan slipped through the exit and emerged beside the rain-soaked slope behind the house. He had built the estate with three escape routes. Sean knew about two.

He followed the third through the woods to a road above the lake. Only when he reached it did he check his phone. Six missed calls from an unknown number. One message from Tessa:

WE GOT OUT. THEY ARE FOLLOWING US.

Declan called her. She answered on the first ring.

“Take the ferry road,” he said. “There’s a twenty-four-hour diner near the terminal. Stay where people can see you.”

Camille’s voice came over the line. “Declan, Sean has the original medical file.”

“How do you know?”

May you like

“Because I gave it to him.”

Before Declan could ask why, a crash sounded through the phone. The call went dead.
