Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE BED

“Don’t make a sound,” the maid whispered. “Your wife is walking.”
Declan Walsh stared at Tessa. For two years, his wife had lain unconscious in the west wing of their Mercer Island home. He had spoken to her every night and never once heard her answer.
He started toward the bedroom. Tessa caught his sleeve.
“Look first,” she said.
Through the narrow gap in the door, Declan saw Camille’s empty hospital bed. Its blankets had been thrown aside. An IV line dripped onto the hardwood. The ventilator was silent.
Camille walked into view wearing jeans and a black sweater. Her hair was glossy. Her steps were steady.
She crossed to the painting beside the fireplace, moved it aside, and entered the code to Declan’s private safe.
He felt the first shock begin to give way to anger. He had buried men over the bomb that put her in that bed. He had spent two years blaming himself for letting her drive his car.
Camille took a brown envelope from the safe.
A man’s voice came from the far side of the room. “Did you find it?”
Declan shifted his position. Dr. Aris stood near the bathroom door, holding a phone.
“Almost,” Camille said. “He changed the inner lock.”
“He’ll be back at seven.”
Camille glanced at the clock. “Then we have three hours.”
Declan looked down at his watch. It was four minutes past four.
Aris opened his phone. “I’ll call the driver.”
Camille stopped him. “First, find the maid. She saw me yesterday.”

Beside Declan, Tessa went rigid. Her fingers tightened around his sleeve.
Camille put the envelope under her arm and walked toward the bedroom door.
