Chapter 15 - THE GIRL WHO OPENED THE DOOR

The warehouse was empty.

Too empty.

That was the first thing Lorenzo noticed.

“This is wrong.”

I looked around.

“What do you mean?”

“Matteo wouldn’t leave without taking everything.”

We walked deeper inside.

Dust covered the floor.

Old files were scattered everywhere.

But something was waiting for us.

A single box.

With Mia’s name written on it.

My hands shook.

“No.”

Lorenzo opened it carefully.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And one final recording.

Daniel.

His voice filled the room.

“If you found this…”

A small smile.

“Then Mia opened the door.”

I looked at my daughter.

Because somehow, he knew.

He knew she would.

Daniel continued.

“I spent my life protecting secrets.”

A pause.

“But the biggest secret was never the money.”

He looked serious.

“It was the truth about my family.”

The final recording revealed everything.

Matteo had created the entire plan.

The accidents.

The threats.

The disappearances.

But he wasn’t working alone.

Someone inside the estate had helped him.

Someone who had access to every room.

Every document.

Every secret.

Then Daniel said the words that made me stop breathing.

“The person helping Matteo is…”

The recording cut.

Static.

Silence.

Everyone stared.

“No.”

Lorenzo grabbed the device.

“No, no, no.”

Then the warehouse lights turned on.

Slowly.

One by one.

And a voice came from behind us.

“You always were too trusting, Lorenzo.”

We turned.

Matteo Moretti stood there.

Alive.

Older.

Smiling.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You.”

Matteo smiled.

“Surprised?”

“You ruined this family.”

“No.”

Matteo looked at him.

“You did.”

I grabbed Mia.

“Stay behind me.”

Matteo looked at her.

Then smiled.

“So this is the little girl.”

Mia stared back.

Not afraid.

“She knows the song.”

Matteo’s expression changed.

For the first time...

he looked nervous.

“You should have stayed hidden,” Matteo said.

I stepped forward.

“You’re afraid of a three-year-old?”

Matteo looked at Mia.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m afraid of what she remembers.”

Lorenzo moved closer.

“What did you do to Daniel?”

Matteo smiled.

“The same thing I did to everyone who stood against me.”

My heart stopped.

“Where is he?”

Silence.

Then Matteo answered.

“He never left.”

The words made no sense.

“What?”

Matteo looked toward the door.

“He’s been closer than you think.”

The warehouse door opened.

And someone stepped inside.

Someone I never expected to see.

Someone who made Lorenzo collapse emotionally.

Someone who changed everything.

A man with tired eyes.

A familiar smile.

A face Mia recognized immediately.

“Daddy.”

I stopped breathing.

Because after all these years...

May you like

Daniel Moretti was alive.
