Chapter 11 - THE SMILE THAT HID THE LIE

I didn’t answer.

The knock came again.

Slow.

Calm.

Almost polite.

“Mama?”

I pulled Mia closer.

“Stay behind me.”

The door opened.

And Isabella stepped inside.

I relaxed slightly.

But only slightly.

Because after everything I learned...

I didn’t know who to trust anymore.

“Clara.”

Her voice was soft.

“We need to talk.”

I looked at her.

“About what?”

“About Daniel.”

I shook my head.

“No more secrets.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.”

That surprised me.

She walked inside and closed the door.

“I owe you the truth.”

She sat down.

For the first time, Isabella looked older.

Not like the powerful woman who controlled the estate.

Like someone carrying years of regret.

“Daniel came to me the night he disappeared.”

My heart tightened.

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because he asked me not to.”

I stared.

“He trusted you?”

She nodded.

“He knew someone was watching him.”

“Who?”

Isabella looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside this house.”

The answer terrified me.

“Who?”

She didn’t say a name.

Instead, she handed me a photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside a woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

But Mia immediately recognized her.

She pointed.

“Grandma.”

I froze.

“What?”

Mia touched the picture.

“Grandma sang with Daddy.”

I looked at Isabella.

“Who is she?”

Her face changed.

“That’s your mother.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your mother wasn’t the person you were told she was.”

My entire life felt like it was falling apart.

“My mother died when I was young.”

Isabella nodded.

“That’s what you were told.”

Before I could ask more, the door downstairs slammed.

A loud crash.

Then shouting.

Security rushed through the hallway.

“Someone is in the main hall!”

I grabbed Mia.

Isabella stood.

“We need to move.”

“Where?”

She looked toward the hidden passage behind the bookshelf.

My eyes widened.

“There are secret rooms too?”

The corner of Isabella’s mouth moved slightly.

“This family built everything around secrets.”

We moved through the hidden passage.

Behind us, footsteps followed.

Someone was inside the estate.

Someone knew where we were.

Then Mia suddenly stopped.

“Mama.”

“What?”

She pointed ahead.

“There.”

At the end of the passage was another door.

Small.

Old.

Covered in scratches.

I walked closer.

On the wood was a message.

Written by hand.

Three words.

FOR MIA ONLY.

My hands shook.

I opened the door.

Inside was a small room.

A room untouched for years.

There were books.

Photographs.

And one old recording device.

Beside it was a letter.

My name was written on the front.

Clara.

I opened it.

May you like

And the first sentence destroyed me.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you myself.
