Chapter 9 – The Doctor's Secret

The doctor placed the cooler on the desk.
He removed a syringe.
Oliver instinctively stepped backward.
"I don't want another shot."
"You'll feel better afterward."
"I always feel sleepy."
Grace clenched her fists.
The man had been drugging the child.
He prepared the injection.
Then paused.
His phone vibrated.
He answered quietly.
"Yes."
"I'm here."
"No."
"He hasn't caused any problems."
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
Even distorted...
Grace recognized it immediately.
Isabella.
"Tonight is the last treatment."
"Tomorrow everything changes."
The doctor nodded.
"It will be done."
He ended the call.
Before he could approach Oliver...
Grace grabbed an old metal lamp.
She stepped from behind the bed.
"Drop it."
The doctor spun around.
Too late.
Grace swung the lamp.
It struck his shoulder.
The syringe flew across the room.
Oliver kicked the medical cooler toward the man's legs.
He lost his balance.
Grace and Oliver ran into the tunnel.
Behind them...
The doctor shouted.
"Stop them!"
An alarm suddenly echoed through the underground passage.

Red emergency lights flashed overhead.
The entire hidden basement had entered lockdown.
